Quick plot post this morning before I run off to a meeting. Release points for Matt Cain and Geno Espineli from last nights loss against the Padres. Cain’s release point looks pretty good. The pitches are grouped pretty closely together. Sometimes if a pitcher changes his arm angle to throw a breaking ball, hitters will be able to tell by… Read more →
How many Giants blogs are providing in depth looks at Brad Hennessey? Eh? Not many! And for good reason, he’s not the most exciting pitcher on the Giants team and it’s possible that he could be non-tendered before the 2009 season. Still, his spot start yesterday could have bought him some more time with the team and it definitely bought… Read more →
Your head might spin after you read this post but I thought it would be interesting to examine a successful Barry Zito start. We haven’t had many opportunities to do so this year and after Zito’s start last night, I figured now was the perfect time. Zito’s line from last nights game against the D-Backs: 6 IP, 5 H, 2… Read more →
After watching Matt Palmer struggle once again to throw strikes in last nights game, I got to wondering, why do Giants pitchers always seem to walk so many batters? Poor Palmer walked 6 hitters in 4.1 innings pitched — he walked a total of 13 hitters in 3 major league starts. The “real Matt Palmer” that Mike Krukow told us… Read more →
If you’ve seen one game this year of Giants baseball you know that this team doesn’t hit for power. Not hitting for power means not hitting for home runs. El Lefty Malo recently touched on this conundrum. The Giants, as a team, aren’t projected to eclipse the century mark for home runs this year. They would be the first team… Read more →
Quick post today, Matt Cain has historically been a better pitcher in the 2nd half of the season. It’s not surprising to see him do well in his first three starts since the 2nd half started — 4 GS, 28.2 IP, 24 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 10 BB, 23 SO, 1.57 ERA. Something I’ve noticed with Cain since the… Read more →
B-E, A-G-G-R-E-S-S-I-V-E. Now I’ve got that Faith No More song stuck in my head. * Side note: Any FNM fans out there? What’s your favorite album? I’m a big fan of Angel Dust but Album of the Year always hits a soft spot for me as well. After initially hitting on it some in my last post, I got to… Read more →
Hey, whaddya know, Matt Cain got a win last night against the Washington Nationals. The Giants beat the Washington Nationals 3-2 in the series finale that secured the 4-game sweep. The Nationals turned out to be just what the doctor ordered for Cain, they are the weakest hitting team in the majors and hopefully the win can get Cain back… Read more →
We’ve officially played a month of baseball and the Giants have done surprisingly well. Their current record of 13-16 puts them at 3rd place in the National League West. A traditionally strong NL West has looked slightly weaker this year than previous years. The Rockies and Padres have both gotten off to slow starts and both share the same 11-17… Read more →
