Wednesday Infographic: Things you already painfully know

This team might have had trouble hitting.

Again, kind of like Otis’ Failure Cake post, this is based on offense only — relative to the league split for that position. sOPS+ was used because it’s readily available on Baseball-Reference. We’re also talking about cumulative production from each spot.

Quick takeaways:

* So, shortstop sure . . . → Read More: Wednesday Infographic: Things you already painfully know

What’s a 33-year-old shortstop worth?

It depends. I’ll get to that…

I watched Moneyball today. I read (and loved) the book twice–as I do with most of Michael Lewis‘ works–and I really enjoyed the movie. I’ll leave it at that and save you from the five billionth review. Anyway, here’s how I started a post on Jayson Werth‘s contact back . . . → Read More: What’s a 33-year-old shortstop worth?

Cy Youngs, MVPs and moving on

I think  we’ve been trying to prepare you for the inevitable for a while now here at Bay City Ball: The Giants are not defending their title in 2011. It’s awful tough to do so when you don’t qualify for the postseason. (Not to mention, we’d been showing you the warning signs about their inability . . . → Read More: Cy Youngs, MVPs and moving on

Veterans go splat

Now that Aaron Rowand is gone from the clubhouse, and Murph has done a proper censing to rid the space of veteran spirits, we can look back on the career of Aaron Rowand as a gritty, and gutty, San Francisco Giant.

Well, that was originally my plan before I set out to write this post, . . . → Read More: Veterans go splat

The magic is gone

I’ve missed a lot of games this season. What have I done instead? You name it. Today, I went and saw a film called Sarah’s Key. (It was a solid film with a great story and great acting by Kristin Scott Thomas. Unfortunately, the director sort of lost his way and it ultimately didn’t accomplish . . . → Read More: The magic is gone

Giants don’t get into bullpens early or often enough

Last week, the Giants acquired Carlos Beltran for their very best pitching prospect, Zack Wheeler, and promptly went on to beat the Phillies to complete a winning series of two out of three. A few people wondered if it was time to consider the possibility that they could catch the Phillies for home-field advantage throughout . . . → Read More: Giants don’t get into bullpens early or often enough

Giants trade for Orlando Cabrera

And just like that, all our problems were solved.

Still intent on shoring up their infield, the Giants obtained 15-year veteran Orlando Cabrera from the Cleveland Indians on Saturday night for Minor League outfielder Thomas Neal.

Cabrera, 36, has played 83 games this season at second base for Cleveland, which has Asdrubal Cabrera at shortstop. . . . → Read More: Giants trade for Orlando Cabrera

Giants acquire league-average hitting middle infielder

The Giants grabbed slappy slapper Jeff Keppinger from the Houston Astros for minor league right-handed pitchers Henry Sosa and Jason Stoffel. First, let’s discuss what they gave up.

We’ve begun working on a mid-season top-15 prospect list here at Bay City Ball, and neither Stoffel or Sosa landed in my top 15. Stoffel is . . . → Read More: Giants acquire league-average hitting middle infielder

MLB Gameday Mobile [2.0]

Don’t you sometimes hate how dry MLB Gameday can be on your Android/iPhone/Other? It’s so straight forward, it’s nearly dishonest, and it feels terribly condescending. For example, let’s say Brad Lidge is pitching…

Aaron Roward strikes out swinging.

Thanks, MLB Gameday. Duh!

Or, when Jonathan Sanchez is pitching…

Carlos Beltran walks.

Really, MLB Gameday? . . . → Read More: MLB Gameday Mobile [2.0]

Division-favorite Giants need to be creative

Back on May 25, I wrote about the Giants’ inability to score via the home run. Unfortunately, you may not have read that piece because something horrible happened that night, something far more unfortunate than you not reading what I’d written. The Giants lost the game and their star catcher. And we lost our innocence.
