Not much Giants news happening today. Probably the “biggest” news item is that former Giants catcher, Eliezer Alfonzo, has signed a minor league deal with the San Diego Padres.

These are slow times for Giants-related baseball news.

Anyways, you’ll probably remember Alfonzo for his 2006 season in which he hit: .266/.302/.465 with 12 HR’s in 200-something AB’s. He missed most of 2007 with a knee injury and was suspended for 50 games in 2008 when he tested positive for a banned substance. With the catching depth in the Giants organization right now — Sandoval, Holm, Witter, and Posey — Alfonzo was going to have a hard path to the majors. He could make the Padres as a backup catcher for 2009.
