Here’s a graph for the bases-loaded 9th inning showdown between Brian Wilson and Kaz Matsui. The graph represents each pitch in the at-bat and the result: foul, strike, ball, and in-play. It took Wilson 15 pitches to eventually put Matsui away on a flyball to LF Andres Torres. From the graph, you can that from [...]

Outside of on-field performance, there’s a few things that will always endear me to a pitcher. Stirrups, check. Weird facial hair, check. Funky pitching motions, double-check. As a fan of the Giants and their farm system, sometime around 2007 Sergio Romo caught my eye when he completely devastated the California League. If you ever read [...]

When it comes to evaluating prospects or looking at roster make-up, I’ve always been a little biased against relievers. It’s not that I think all relievers are replaceable, but in the short-term of baseball history, what teams have paid for and what they’ve gotten has been grossly out of proportion when it comes to relief [...]

Mark one more case off the arbitration list — the Giants have agreed to a 1-year deal worth $4,437,500 with closer Brian Wilson. The near $4.5M that Wilson agreed to is the midpoint between the Giants offer of $4M and the $4,875,000 that Wilson filed for. Wilson’s salary for 2010 represents a $4M raise over [...]

In today’s post, I’m catching up to a few random thoughts that I’ve had over the past week, but haven’t had the time to get to. Brad Penny’s Velocity Before the Giants signed Brad Penny, one of the positive indicators that he had going for him was that his velocity was still regularly in the [...]

In a rain-soaked affair, Randy Johnson defeated the Nationals last night to secure his 300th win. The Giants managed to score 5 runs for Johnson — the majority of them came in the 9th after he left the game — and thanks to some tight-rope bullpen work from Brian Wilson, the night ended in victory. [...]

I’m getting back online after a week hiatus from blogging. Sometimes real life takes over and the fun stuff (Giants baseball and blogging) has to take a back seat. But, have no fear, I’m back and you should be seeing updates with more regularity heading into the future. In today’s post, I wanted to look [...]

Not a very pretty game for the Giants. With the team leading 4-1 and heading into the bottom of the 9th inning, Brian Wilson just couldn’t close the game out. Even though he didn’t walk anyone, you can see from the pitch location graph above that he wasn’t pounding the zone either. The start of [...]

(Warning: Long post) (Edit: I’ve updated my data a little, instead of using my Giants projections from my 2009 Team WAR post, I decided to just run CHONE across the board for every team. Overall, this didn’t really change the rankings but I thought it would be fairer to do it this way.) Today we’ll [...]

I’ve been playing around with EditGrid this morning and I made a few graphs relating to the 2009 Giants WAR projections. There really isn’t any new information presented in these graphs, but they might help some to see just where the wins are actually coming from. I like this pie chart because it shows — [...]
