All stats are from the period between December 23 and January 1.
Happy New Year, all! Thanks for sticking with us for another year. I delayed the final major Winter Leagues Digest past the new year because the final day of the Puerto Rican and Venezuelan leagues landed on Monday plus I figured you’d all have something better to do than read what some nerd had to say about minor league baseball over the holidays.
The sections on the completed leagues contain the final lines for each player. Let’s get started with the Venezuelan League.

Anzoategui: Jon Meloan did not play. His last appearance was December 1. His final line is 1-0 with a 1.31 ERA, seven saves, 23 strikeouts, and five walks in 20 2/3 innings over 19 games.
Margarita: Boof Bonser did not play. His last start was November 17, a very brief appearance where he pitched 1 2/3 innings and took the loss. Bonser had six starts and went 0-2 with a 3.65 ERA. He threw 24 2/3 innings and had 14 strikeouts and eight walks…Mitch Lively did not play. Like Bonser, his season ended in mid-November. He was 0-2 with a 7.71 ERA and pitched 9 1/3 innings in 10 relief appearances. He had six strikeouts and three walks…Yusmeiro Petit did not play. He ended the year 2-3 with a 3.82 ERA and threw 35 1/3 innings in six starts. He had 25 strikeouts and 10 walks. Petit had a very similar winter season to his year in Fresno–7-7, 3.46 ERA, 153 strikeouts in 166 2/3 innings–and may be a nice arm for the Giants to keep around for 2013.
Lara: Edwin Escobar did not play even though he was listed on the Cardinales roster. Kind of a drag because I wanted to see him this winter…Guillermo Quiroz played in two games at the end of the year and went 1-for-5 with a walk and a strikeout. His final line was .252/.315/.313 (average/OBP/slugging) with two doubles, two home runs, 11 RBIs, 10 walks, 31 strikeouts, and a stolen base.
Caracas: Daniel Mayora went 7-for-18 with two home runs and six RBIs in the final week of the winter season. He salvaged a bad month of December at the plate with the good week. His final line is .273/.379/.427 with five doubles, four home runs, 23 RBIs, and three steals…Jesus Galindo did not play. He was another one I was really eager to follow this winter. Maybe I’ll luck out and he’ll end up in San Jose this year.
Magallanes: Pablo Sandoval’s power dried up after he returned to the Magallanes lineup on December 27. He had two hits and one RBI in 16 at-bats. Sandoval ended his season 8-for-35 with one homer, five RBIs, four walks, and a strikeout. His final line is .229/.325/.343…Jean Machi allowed two runs (both unearned) December 30 against Anzoategui, marking his final two outings of the year without allowing an earned run. Machi earn three saves in his final five outings. He ended the season 0-1 with a 6.06 ERA and pitched 16 1/3 innings over 16 games. He allowed 11 runs and four walks with 11 strikeouts.
La Guaira: Gregor Blanco played in one final game before the end of the regular season and went 2-for-5 with two runs. His final line is .329/.413/.414 with one double, one home run, four RBIs, 10 walks, 18 strikeouts, and four steals…Javier Herrera went 2-for-12 with six strikeouts and one walk last week. He ended the year hitting .250 over his last 36 at-bats. His final line for the year is .347/.396/.632 with three doubles, eight home runs, 20 RBIs, nine walks, 25 strikeouts, and two steals…Hector Sanchez played in one game last week and went 1-for-4 with a home run and a strikeout. His final line is .292/.325/.472 with three home runs, four doubles, 16 RBIs, four walks, and 17 strikeouts…Ehire Adrianza’s last game was November 21. He was 12-for-37 over his last 10 games. He ends the year at .276/.379/.391 with six doubles, two triples, five RBIs, 12 walks, and 20 strikeouts.
All the Giants representatives in the Puerto Rican league saw action in the final week, even Cristian Otero.
| Name | Position | League | Team | 2012 club | Acquired |
| Cristian Otero | SS | PR | Manati | AZL | 11 (18th round) |
| Gaspar Santiago | LHP | PR | Santurce | Salem-Keizer | 10 (28th round) |
| Edwin Quirarte | RHP | PR | Caguas | Richmond | 08 (5th round) |
| Johnny Monell | C | PR | Caguas | Richmond | 07 (30th round) |
Otero got into a game on the second to last day of the season. In fact, he played in both halves of a double-header against Mayaguez on December 29. He went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts over the two games, thus he has a .000 mark for all batting stats…Gaspar Santiago made one relief appearance December 26 and threw three innings with two runs allowed and four strikeouts. Santiago’s final line is 1-0 with a 2.51 ERA in 14 1/3 innings over seven appearances. He had six walks and 12 strikeouts…Edwin Quirarte pitched a scoreless inning December 27 and struck out one batter. His final line is 0-1 with a 1.50 ERA, six strikeouts, and no walks in six innings over four games…Johnny Monell went 4-for-16 with two home runs, two RBIs, and three walks in the final week of the year. His final line is .276/.382/.552 with six doubles, a triple, seven home runs, 17 RBIs, 16 walks, and 26 strikeouts.
After Cameron Lamb went to the Astros in the Rule V Draft a few weeks ago, I thought my Australian Baseball League reporting was over. Teenage outfielder Ben Leslie joined the Melbourne Aces December 20.
| Name | Position | League | Team | 2012 club | Acquired |
| Ben Leslie | OF | ABL | Melbourne | Cheltenham Rustlers (Australia) | FA 12 |
Leslie signed with the Giants last January after hitting over .400 for his club team in Australia, the Cheltenham Rustlers. He was a top prospect at every level and is a big asset if his potential as a power hitting outfielder pans out. So far Leslie is 1-for-15 with a double and an RBI with five strikeouts and a walk. He’s played left field in all seven games for the Aces.
The Nicaraguan League played only played six games since December 23. Looks like they took a few days off for Christmas and then for the New Year.
| Name | Position | League | Team | 2012 club | Acquired |
| Mark Minicozzi | 1B/3B | LBPN | Boer | Richmond/Augusta | FA 12 |
| Carlos Teller | LHP | LBPN | Boer | Pittsburgh org (2008) | FA 12 |
| Wilber Bucardo | RHP | LBPN | Leon | DNP | FA 04 |
Mark Minicozzi went 5-for-10 with a home run and a double last week and is hitting really well over the last few weeks…Carlos Teller had two appearances—a start and a relief outing—and had a no-decision in his start where he pitched five innings and allowed seven hits and three walks. He picked up a save December 29 by pitching 2 2/3 innings with two walks…Wilber Bucardo made one start and took the 4-3 loss for Leon with one strikeout and two walks in 2 1/3 innings.
Both Giants prospects in Colombia got into action last week.
| Name | Position | League | Team | 2012 club | Acquired |
| Carlos Willoughby | 2B | LCPB | Monteria | Augusta | FA 07 |
| Leonardo Fuentes | OF | LCPB | Cartagena | AZL | FA 09 |
Carlos Willoughby went 5-for-19 with two triples and six strikeouts…Leonardo Fuentes went 0-for-1.
That’s it for the main winter league digests. I’ll do a final one for the lesser known leagues around January 14. Thanks for reading!
