I added a new name to the Puerto Rican report: right-handed reliever Edwin Quirarte. Too bad it’s the second to last report.
|Cristian Otero||SS||PR||Manati||AZL||11 (18th round)|

|Edwin Quirarte||RHP||PR||Caguas||Richmond||08 (5th round)|
|Johnny Monell||C||PR||Caguas||Richmond||07 (30th round)|
Gaspar Santiago earned his first win of the winter with 2 1/3 scoreless innings against Mayaguez. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out one…Edwin Quirarte has been pitching for Caguas since December 11 and I missed it. He’s allowed two runs (one earned) over five innings this winter. Quirarte is 0-1 in three appearances. The right-hander pitched 45 1/3 innings over 39 games in Double-A Richmond this year. He was the Giants’ fifth round pick in the 2008 Draft…Johnny Monell went 3-for-3 with a double and 3 RBIs December 18, then went 0-for-7 over the final two games of the week. Monell is hitting .184 since December 5…Cristian Otero did not play.
The lesser known winter leagues in Colombia and Nicaragua run into mid-January. After next week’s report I might just do a final wrap-up in January due to the very small amount of info I get from both these leagues.
|Mark Minicozzi||1B/3B||LBPN||Boer||Richmond/Augusta||FA 12|
|Carlos Teller||LHP||LBPN||Boer||Pittsburgh org (2008)||FA 12|
|Wilber Bucardo||RHP||LBPN||Leon||DNP||FA 04|
In Nicaragua, Mark Minicozzi suddenly found his stroke with a big week at the plate. He went 5-for-10 with a double and a home run…Carlos Teller dropped another start despite throwing pretty well, with seven strikeouts in six innings in his turn this week. He’s at 0-5 for the season…Wilber Bucardo’s record went to 4-2 after he lost a poor start, 2 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.
|Carlos Willoughby||2B||LCPB||Monteria||Augusta||FA 07|
|Leonardo Fuentes||OF||LCPB||Cartagena||AZL||FA 09|
The Colombian League only has box scores listed through December 19, and neither Carlos Willoughby nor Leonardo Fuentes played.
See you next week with the final report from Venezuela and Puerto Rico. Happy holidays!
