I think Scutaro has been historically misvalued, as he has an insane contact rate. He likely would have won the batting championship were it not for his BABIP being so low in the first half. That being said, the age factor is always a concern, but given his plate approach and durability, I like the 2-yr $14m line.

I say sign Scutaro, and Theriot too.  Get Pagan signed as well.  Pence: let's see what he does next season.  This group of players was much more athletic than the 2010 group.

I agree with all that you said except when you said keeping the band together didn't work in 2011. Three words why: Buster Posey, DL.

brooksbouchard You forgot to mention the loss of Freddy Sanchez, too.

With the other options out there, you got no choice but to re-sign scooter.

I'm OK with signing Scutaro up for 2 years $6-7M per season, as I think he would be worth it in transitioning to either Noonan or Panik starting at 2B.  Any more than that, I agree that the risks noted here makes him iffy in signing, and I would rather just stay with Theriot as our putative starting 2B, with Noonan and perhaps another MI cheap free agent (Fontenot?) battling for the starting 2B position.

I don't know anything about the players similar up above, but one flaw with that system is that when you are dealing with non-star players in the similarities, you are talking one point in time - age 36 - with no indication of how good that player actually was at age 36.  It is just that they were roughly in the same vicinity at age 36.

Here is what I see.  If you take Scutaro's stats from 2006-2012, he has this batting line.281/.349/.392/.742, which is amazingly not that far from what he produced in 2012 overall, .306/.348/.405/.753, meaning that he has roughly been about the same over the past 7 seasons, from age 30 to 36.  Moreover, he has been a very good batter, with a great walk to strikeout ratio near 1.0, which is the mark of a very good batter.  Meanwhile, over this period, he has slowly improved in his contact rate, going from a strikeout rate in the teens to one in the high single digits, again, both signs of a very good hitter.  So he may be old, but his strikeout rate is better than ever and while his walk rate has dropped over the years, he was reducing strikeouts at a similar rate, resulting in his stellar BB/K ratios during this period.

The key is remembering that it is our pitching that is winning us these championships.  Ross might have done well in Boston, but his road numbers showed why the Giants and no other teams offered him more than what Boston offered.  Beltran and his agent (Boras) decided that playing the market was more important than sticking with the Giants.  He most likely would have gotten as good if not better contract with the Giants had he negotiated straight away with the Giants instead of wanting to tilt the leverage into their favor by waiting until late in the signing season and teams are more desperate then.  Unfortunately for them, they found out that they were the desperate ones and lucked out that the Cards were willing to take a chance on his injury prone body for two years because they had just lost Pujols, and still he didn't get what he was projected to get.

The Giants learned from when Boras leveraged them in 2003, they bid on Greg Maddux, hoping to shore up their pitching, but the Cubs ended up with Maddux and the Giants were lacking a key pitcher.  They learned to not wait until the last minute to fix up your team, you need to take care of things early or you will be stuck with whatever happens to be there at the end (often nothing).   That did not always pay off - Benitez - but I would rather our GM take a swing with the best available than wait until the end and end up with nothing.

I doubt the Giants will end up having to overpay Scutaro, but even if they have to, I'd be OK with it. Beyond bragging rights, the main benefit of free payroll is to take advantage of opportunities to upgrade positions, but most of the Giants positions are set in stone for marketing/cost control purposes. That allows them, for the next few years, to allocate payroll to the positions of need in the outfield and at 2B. Scutaro's age is a limiting factor - he likely won't be able to continue playing long enough for Sandoval/Posey's salaries to become a problem, so the Giants can afford to pay for infield stability by keeping him here on a short contract. It's true that he blocks doesnt_exist.gif, but there's no guarantee d_e'll ever have a major league career. I'd rather see Conor Gillaspie try to fake 2B at Fresno next year in a vain hope that he can noodle his way back to San Francisco.

The take home message of the 2010 offseason was to not bet on repeat performances for career years of players older than 30; barring regression (Huff, Uribe, Torres), injury (Ross, Torres, Burrell) is the biggest threat to a roster, and Scutaro's shown to be both consistent and durable. Not even Matt Holliday could take him down. Paying for the career numbers of a 37 year old is already an overpay, and I don't see many options in upcoming free agency or trades that could be significantly better. If the Giants are having dreams about signing Robinson Cano, we have look at Rowand, Zito (and Pence?) as a lesson that a player needs to demonstrate success in San Francisco before they're worth committing long-term. And there's no guarantee Cano won't be extended before he hits the market, as is the trend these days.

Last year, the Giants let two valuable outfielders walk because they couldn't afford to pay them. One had a great year in Boston, and the other almost punished San Francisco for their decision. This year's free agent talent might not match up to last offseason's, but that isn't an excuse to be stingy, just shrewd.

I'm far more anxious toward letting Melky walk and resigning Pagan for five years, over keeping Scutaro.

I'm sure Sabes wouldn't make the same mistake he made with Huff...right?
