Giants Since 66

Seems like the Giants always do better at the start of the century.

Giants dominate in pitching, hitting and defense even though Posey and Pence have yet to contribute. Sandoval hits 12 all season and 3 last night. I'm still in a state of blissful shock. #RallyGigantes

It was a fantastically exciting game, but one thing bugged me. The Giants had gone up 6-1 in the 6th inning and Zito was pitching well, then Bochy has Lincecum sub for Zito with 10 outs to go. Zito needed to be relieved, but Lincecum wasn't necessarily the right answer. Lincecum dominating wasn't a certainty - nothing has been with him this year - so there was a risk that he could implode at any time. But at the same time, the Tigers have almost no experience against Lincecum: even in the 2011 season, the rotation that went into the away series at Detroit consisted of Bumgarner, Zito and Vogelsong.

With so little experience, it was possible that the Tigers wouldn't be prepared for Lincecum's delivery and pitching style, unlike teams in the NL West who have long since adjusted to him. There was a chance Lincecum could be much more effective against the naive Tigers than against the Cardinals. Given this, I would have much preferred to save Lincecum in relief for Bumgarner's start, because Bumgarner has struggled during the postseason and Zito had already gone deep enough in the game for the regular bullpen to take over. I don't know for certain if burning Lincecum precludes him from pitching tomorrow, but if it does I'd be worried for Madbum's start, mechanical fix or no.
