Saw this today in an ESPN Insider article:

Barry Zito vs. the umpire's strike zoneHis average fastball this year was a career-low 83.7 mph, the second-lowest velocity in the majors behind knuckleballer R.A. Dickey. However, by throwing a cutter more and keeping hitters guessing about which side of the plate he will work, Zito had his most effective season as a Giant. But with his diminished stuff, having a home plate umpire with a liberal interpretation of the strike zone is advantageous -- and maybe even pivotal -- and it just so happens that Gerry Davis is the home plate umpire tonight, with a reputation for having a relatively small strike zone. In games in which Zito has started with Davis behind home plate, the left-hander has issued 25 walks in 35 2/3 innings, with a 5.05 ERA. Not good.

I actually like starting zito.  if he gets shelled, then so be it.  at the moment, verlander looks about unhittable, so i am all in favour of trying to steal a game with barry and if he is on then good things could happen.  if not, then we focus on game 2 but the reality is that the giants will need to beat verlander at least once to win the WS.

The odd thing is that if Verlander were to throw lefty, he could probably throw harder than Zito.  Here is hoping the giants can hit Verlander hard, and Zito tosses another one of his masterpieces.

You guys think starting Zito starting Game 1 is the right call? Granted, Bochy doesn't have much to choose from. Bochy trusts Zito right now than he does MadBum or Timmy I would think.

FANsince1976 Bumgarner is the only other legitimate option. Winning Game 1 is more a matter of defeating Verlander than Zito pitching a good game, so it's the Giants' best move to put out their worst pitcher in the game they're least likely to win, and hope lightning strikes twice.

I would like to place at least a small part of this post season's results on the excellent dugout work of Clay Hensley.  Most importantly, every second he spends being ultimate clubhouse guy means that he is not on the mound.  Everyone's a winner!

One day to recover then on to the WS.  Still pinching myself ...

That 9th inning thunderstorm was a spectacular scene to conclude the series. Wow.
