MadBum hasn't been "right" since mid August. On 8/14/12, MadBum pitched a complete game win (1 ER, 5 H, 6 K, 1 BB). His next start on 8/20/12 he pitched 8 innings of shutout ball (10K, 0 BB, 4 H). Since those two starts:

8/25/12 vs ATL - 6.1 IP, 4 ER, 5 K, 3 BB, 7 H, 104 pitches, LOSS

8/31/21 @ CHC - 4.0 IP, 4 ER, 3 K, 2 BB, 6 H, 85 pitches, LOSS

9/5/12 vs AZ - 6.1 IP, 4 ER 5 K, 2 BB, 8 H, 97 pitches, LOSS

9/17/12 vs COL - 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 6 K, 5 BB, 4 H, 101 pitches, WIN

9/22/12 vs SD - 5.2 IP, 2 ER, 6 K, 1 BB, 5 H,99 pitches, WIN

9/29/12 @ SD - 4.0 IP, 4 ER, 4 K, 2 BB, 4 H, 76 pitches, LOSS

MadBum had a 5.89 ERA in these seven starts. Then he bombs out in two postseason starts. I hope I don't have start Steve Avery nightmares. :-(

Starting Bumgarner in Game 1 was a questionable decision, not just because of his recent struggles. The Cardinals are one of the best teams in baseball against LHP; even an elite LHP would have trouble pitching against them. Committing Bumgarner to Games 1 and (presumably) 5 seemed more like a chance toward redemption for his poor finish to the year, but it's basically confirmed his ineffectiveness isn't transient, it's a trend.

Had Bochy started Vogelsong in Game 1, with Lincecum in Game 2, Bumgarner would have pitched Game 5 in the mildly pitcher friendly Busch Stadium, on 11 days rest. Vogelsong, Lincecum, and Cain could then combine for the final two games. If fatigue is Bumgarner's undoing, maximizing his rest and limiting his exposure to the Cardinals would have been the optimal strategic decision.
