This blogosphere love affair with Belt goes over the top sometime.  Of course the Giants are impatient with hitters.  teams that expect to compete usually are.  You know who IS patient with hitters - Houston, Kansas City, the Cubs, Pittsburgh (before this year) - teams usually in the cellar.

And to say that Belt "always hits AAA pitching" doesn't tell the whole story.  He barely has over 200 ABs at AAA.  Isn't that considered a small sample size here in the blogosphere?

Personally, I hop Belt kicks major ass and is the Giant's 1B for the next ten years plus.  But that may not help them in 2012 if he doesn't get going.

Tampa is looking for a catcher; they could settle for Kelly ShopVac or Kurt Suzuki...OR...they might like Tommy Joseph, who can catch, play some 1b and fill in at DH...Add Huff and we may get pen help with Wade Davis or Jake McGee...Either has the "potential" to be a closer.

The evidence is Willie Mays.  What do you mean smack off?   You go out and see pitchers and make adjustments.

With only 1200 or so professional AB's the adjustments will come quickly.  If you keep taking guys in and out of

the lineup, you develop a John Bowker..  A guy many think the giants ruined.

Can we talk about the bigger problem of our "ace," Matt Cain, being completely mediocre since the perfect game?  He's been killing us

"However, let me quickly recite my Belt position. I keep a small card in my wallet with my official stance on Belt.

He’s got a chance to be a good player. He’s better than all the other options right now."

What is your fee to obtain said card ? Pretty much my feelings exactly.

Trade suggestion: Lincecum to the Mariners for Brandon League and Jason Vargas. Lincecum would be going home to Washington to play in front of his friends and family, and is under SF control through 2013. Vargas, 28, is under club control for one more year, as he'll be in his final season of arbitration eligibility in 2013. After signing for $4.85 million this season, he figures to be in line for another significant raise. The left-hander has already equaled his career-high with 10 wins, as he's 10-7 with a 3.91 ERA in 21 starts.

League, on the other hand will be a FA after this season but would be a much-needed "rental" boost to our bull pen. If Wilson returns healthy in 2013, we have the option of trying to resign League or let him go elsewhere. League made it to the All-Star game this year. He was the Mariners' closer last year, but got bumped down to late-inning relief this season to make way for a younger, harder throwing arm on Seattle's roster. And, if Lincecum alone isn't enough to swing the deal, then toss in Joseph as the "sweetener."

Also, suggest we package Nate, Joseph, Peguero & Runzler for Willingham from Twins; while alternating Blanco with Pagan in CF. Also, send Belt back to Fresno for much-needed seasoning and confidence while alternating Buster and Hector at C & 1B. Latest news has Hector taking grounders at 1B during his rehab with his new 1B mitt sent to him by his agent.

@StuGish The Twins don't want to trade Willingham, but will if they are "overwhelmed" by an offer. And an offer of Nate, Joseph, Peguero, and Runzler is no overwhelming offer. Quantity doesn't equal quality.

EarlNash

@SFrush90  @StuGish Yes, those quantity for quality deals are not often feasible; you would need to find a team in the re-build mode that had a star player with a large and long contract commitment.  EX: by the time Seattle can challenge the AL West [Rangers, Angels, young A;s], King Felix will be collecting Soc. Sec. checks; they keep him to put fans in the seats for his starts; they may dump his salary and take top prospects [ETA 2014-15] to fill out their future roster.

It is clear that he needs to play because 1. he is very talented,   2. he has proven all he has to prove in the minors  3. he needs to adjust to major league pitching which he cannot do in the minors.  I bet you would have told the same thing to Leo Durocher, when Mays was struggling in 1951.  Either you know talent when you see it or you do not.  Plus he has an OPS over 800 at AT&T.  How many other Giants have an OPS over 800 at AT&T?  Three others maybe.  Does that mean Pagan, Theriot, Crawford,  Arias,  Sanchez, and Schierholtz all need to go?  Or do you always believe in small sample size?

>> I think it’s clear that he needs to play every day, somewhere

Is it clear?  What is the evidence that struggling players only reach their potential if they're given an unfettered long string of starts?  Aren't there just as many players who are used sparingly under favorable conditions until they're proven ready for full-time work?  Hasn't he done all he can playing regularly in the minors?  What does he really gain from regularly being sent out when things aren't going well?

Zegonite: I was in the same boat as most of the others when you first mentioned the words "Alfonso" and "Soriano" in the same sentence.  He's aging, overpaid, awful on defense, etc... HOWEVER, you make some very good points, and have actually helped me reconsider my stance on the topic.  The Giants have the pitching to make a serious run.  The defense has gotten considerably better with time.  When this team is hot, they can beat anyone... But you're right, we can't count on Buster and Melky EVERY time out.  We've got the team to make a run right now, but we certainly don't have the pop to play in a dog fight.  That's the difference.  In 2010, we do not make it to the postseason without Pat Burrell, despite his awful defense.  If and only if the Cubs are willing to eat his salary and send him over for relatively cheap (maybe for a Nick Noonan, Seth Rosin, Francisco Peguero type of combination), he could help.  Toss him in left for 6-7 innings a night, let him get his 3 at bats, and sub Blanco or Schierholtz in for him in the late innings.  Thanks for opening my eyes a bit.

For those people who think fondly of Matt Williams, try to remember his first three seasons in the bigs, where his highest BA was .205 and his highest OPS was .697. Lets try not to bury Belt just yet.

besides if you want to compare to 2010, i'm pretty sure the only .300 hitter the Giants had was Posey (can't remember what Freddy batted, so i may be wrong). they're in much better shape offensively now than they were then. yes, i completely agree that they bat like a AA team from time to time, but if they can get their lineup to break out of their slumps (Pagan, Blanco, Panda, etc), they'd be in excellent shape. Theriot, Melky, and Posey seem to be able to produce very consistently and even Crawford is slowly but suredly making his way up to respectability. the only starter that has looked lost at the plate for 90% of the time has been Belt, which is why i think he's the one that needs to go, if they can actually upgrade

Giancarlos Delgado Braun
Giancarlos Delgado Braun

really, i doubt they'll be able to add a significant bat in any form, unfortunately. the market is pretty thin, and their farm system has become even thinner over the last couple years. if Soriano was going to only play Giambi or Matt Stairs type role, then i'd agree w/ you.

My only request is for a ban on rental players. I still have a bad taste in my mouth from seeing Beltran walk.

Crazy trade scenario A1: Giants trade Gregor Blanco, Ryan Theriot, Brett Pill, and Dan Otero in exchange for Ben Zobrist, who is currently signed through 2013. He takes over at 2B and can move to the OF next year if Joe Panik is ready and either Pagan or Melky aren't resigned.

@Damon Blanco, Theriot, Pill, and Otero for Zobrist? Ya no way, not even close.

Seriously, of course it's easy to gaze longingly at the homerun totals of other teams. But there's more than one way to skin a cat. The Giants are a pitching-based team playing in a pitcher's park. Consider:

- It's been all of two years since the Giants won the World Series without a 30-homerun hitter.

- In a hitter-friendly park Posey would have easily 20 homers by now - I can almost count the other seven (at least) that he got 'ATT'd' on. Granted, the Giants' lack of power has been worrisome, but until the second coming of Barry Bonds you're not likely to see 40-homerun seasons at ATT.

- It's far too early to say the Panda's power won't come back.

- You can't measure the importance of defense statistically, especially outfield play in a park like ours, because there's no stat for balls that aren't gotten to. Would Soriano produce enough runs to make up for the ones he'll give up will his abysmal fielding?

"...and it's clear that the only way we'll have a serious chance to be a contender is to get a deal together for Alfonso Soriano."

The only way, eh? Glad we got that settled then.

Soriano Ks wayyyyy too much to be worth it.  the way you have your lineup right there, you have 2 almost guaranteed strikeouts at 6 and 7, followed by a grounder to second, almost every single time. plus, Soriano is terrible defensively (he only plays left field, and there's NO way they're gonna stick him in AT&T's right field). there are much better options for the Giants out there. a right handed bat (w/ some power) off the bench and some strong(er) middle relief is what they need

@expat joel Chris was, in fact, not alive 2 years ago.  This is a blog by babies, for babies.

Hahaha but really.

He hasn't really been the lock down bullpen arm he was with us in the past.  He's just getting rocked by righties but doing fine enough against lefties.

LOL You're lumping Javier Lopez in with Penny and Hensley as 'not the kind of players you want to pitch in high-leveraged situations'? Um, were you alive in 2010? (Or on the road trip last week for that matter?)

How about Hanley Ramirez? I've heard that the Marlins are willing to trade him and he's the kind of player the Giants covet. A 5-Tool athlete who will be coming at cheap, compared to the value of the type of player he could become. Just remember we almost traded Lincecum after his 2nd Cy Young Season for this guy. The only bad news I've heard is that the Marlins are trying to have teams take on Heath Bell's $30 mil contract as well which I would not support as he's not the bullpen help we need unless he can significantly turn things around and treurn to his old rom.

since the Mets are tanking, how 'bout David Wright for Belt, Pill, Burris, cash, and a player to be named later? (or substitute Schierholtz for Burris, since no one in their right mind would actually want Burris)

Chris Quick

@Giancarlos Delgado Braun I bet they'd do it for just Pill and Burriss.
