Now in hindsight, I can agree with more foresight.  They should have

skipped LIncecum's start.  Start the second half with a Bumgarner,

Vogelsong, Cain, Zito, Lincecum, rotation, and skip LIncecum's

first start, giving him a good two weeks rest.

The issue is not whether he can take on left-handed batters, but rather whether his elbow can take the daily grind of being "THE CLOSER".  Even in his relatively limited usage over the past couple of seasons, he still had a period each season where he couldn't come out of the bullpen because his elbow is cranky.  Imagine if the Giants had used him as much as some fans were clamoring for, maybe he'll be lining up for TJS.

I think the Giants know how good Romo is.  After all, both Sabean and Bochy are known for preferring a strong bullpen, and building strong bullpens.   Bochy doesn't compile a great career record in 1-run games, one of the few managers capable of doing that at a statistically significant rate, unless he knows how to build, develop, and manage great relievers.

But when you have a combo of extremes in Romo and Lopez, who as a duo can shut down the middle of any lineup in the late innings, clearing the way for the closer to earn the glory of the save, that's a great luxury (and advantage) to have, because often, the critical time for a save happens in the 7th or 8th inning, not the 9th..  That's why the Giants had the longest streak of not losing a 3 or 4 run lead over the past couple to few years, late in the game.

@ogc Yes. Why I included the caveats of "if healthy."

It should be extremely hot Sunday for Lincecum's start.  I say skip his start.
