According to the official Giants twitter feed, this is happening:
Here’s Penny’s stats with the Triple-A Fresno Grizzlies: 5.40 ERA, 8.1 IP, 9 H, 8 R, 5 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO. Penny is coming off a completely dreadful year with the Detroit Tigers — 181.2 IP, 77 ERA+, 1.2 BB/9, 3.7 K/9 — and it’s pretty hard to say how much he has left in the tank. There’s a good chance he’s completely toast. The 34-year-old right-hander pitched successfully for the Giants in 2009 as a mid-season scrapheap pickup after being released from the Boston Red Sox. Penny, who’ll presumably will take over long-man duties in the bullpen, last pitched in Fresno on June 27th, meaning he should be ready to if needed in tonight’s game.
Shane Loux, the team’s current long-man/mop-up guy, appeared in 11 games this year. His current pitching line reads: 4.50 ERA, 16 IP, 19 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 3 HR, 3 BB, 8 SO, 81 ERA+.
UPDATE: To take a quick trip down memory lane, the last time Penny pitched for the Giants, this was the lineup …
Feels like a billion years ago.
