A good example this year is Vogelsong.  Although he had one bad inning last time.

He gets in trouble and seems to pitch his way out of it.  Earlier in his career he did

not have those skills.  Is it mental toughness?  Does weed have something to do

with it?   You can actually see the difference in the expressions on his face when he

is in the groove, and when he is not.   I still think a skipped turn in the rotation will

do him wonders.

Chris, what does it say about me if I think Timmy's issues are mental? It's not the velocity, that is somewhat back. And it's not the mechanics because he finds them for most of the game. He knows what the right mechanics feel like, he knows how to do them, he knows how to find them. The fact that he can be so flawless for most of the game and throw batting practice for one random inning (not always the first or last) points to concentration issues to me. Or is it pitching out of the stretch? When the other pitchers get in trouble, they are able to concentrate and make the pitch they need to.

I was mortified Bochy put Edlefsen in. He's been used almost exclusively in low leverage situations because of how 'hittable' he is at times. I certainly didn't expect to see a walk-off HR, but trotting him out felt like a white flag. Even if we look at this loss strategically, where Casilla and Romo aren't rushed into an emergency situation and are weakened for later appearances, it's still a loss against a division rival, making this game more important than any of the four against the Cubs.

@TSF I was shocked as well. Romo was warming up, so clearly he was available. Lopez was available as well. Maybe they were holding Casilla back for one more day of rest, but before the game Bochy was saying he was available. All three are better choices, what were they being saved for? This notion of strict roles for pitchers gets a little overblown at times, just because it's not the 8th inning, or you might have a save situation coming up, doesn't mean you have to hold off on using your best pitcher! That was a high-leverage, high-pressure, important inning!

@TSF You hit the nail right on the head!

Giants need to hit some homers.  They have actually hit with the elite teams

on the road but not at San Diego.  The giants need to hit homers.  I was

not happy that they had to go to Edelfson in the ninth.   The homer hit off

of Affeldt was some piece of hitting  Posey had his shot in the top of the

9th but hit a weak ground out.

Bullpen is just super thin right now. That's twice in a week that Edlefsen has been forced into high leverage situations (where he does not belong).

Edlefsen (not -son).  And we may have Brad Penny in another month or so, as a power pitcher with lots of savvy and experience, while Hembree gets things straightened out in Fresno.

@AdamDoctolero  George Kontos, whom the Giants got for Chris Stewart, has a 1.71 ERA at Fresno in the "hitter-friendly" PCL, has given up 24 hits in 31+ innings, has a BB/K ratio of just under 4 (26 K in the 31 innings), and a WHIP of 0.98.  He also has MLB experience with the Yankees.  Maybe he would be the best choice to replace Edlefson, whose appearance makes my heart sink faster than his own sinker pitches.

Agreed on Edlefsen, but I can't help but think Heath Hembree should be in that pen right now.

@AdamDoctolero Hembree is struggling and last I heard, the Giants aren't using him on consecutive days. I think one of the beat guys was speculating that he's dealing with arm tenderness.

@Chris Quick Good to know and that certainly changes things if he's dealing with an injury.

@AdamDoctolero Hembree is struggling in Fresno at this point.

@ariess Doesn't really bother me as he's shown the ability to miss bats and the PCL is hitter-friendly.

Perhaps, but scouting off a stat sheet is not the way to determine who is ready.  I haven't seen Kontos, so I can't speak on him and what he does, but I've seen enough of Hembree to believe he is close to being ready and he should get a shot at some point.
