To paraphrase a story an anecdote from SB Nation a few weeks ago: He hit into a double play? Well, at least he didn't strike out.

@Squire12 Apples and oranges. Belt had a better walk rate and strikeout rate than Kieschnick at Fresno, and, once Kieschnick's ISO normalizes, I bet it dips below what Belt did there, too.

@LuvdemGints I absolutely agree with putting Belt in the #2 hole.  He's got a high OBP (much higher than Crawford's) and runs the bases pretty well.  He'll probably get some better pitches to hit as well.

A few days ago, I heard Sabean critique Brandon Belt saying that he has one of the highest missed (swing) strike ratios in the league.  Very reassuring.  What Sabean failed to mention was that Belt has an on base average around .350----about 5th highest on the team.  Belt takes a lot of pitches and this increases his propensity to strike out.  It also increases his chances to draw a walk.  In his minor league and limited major league career, Belt's on base average is usually close to .100 points above his batting average.  Until he starts unleashing his latent power, it seems to me that Belt   (rather than Brandon Crawford) should be playing daily and betting second.  This would take advantage of Belt's "better than average" on base average.  Eventually, I could see him hitting in the middle of the order.  I'm reminded of Matt williams who hit close to .200 in his first three years with the Giants---and with lots of strikeouts.  The major difference with Williams is that they didn't over-analyze him and showed him a lot more confidence than they are showing Belt.

At first I couldn't figure out why he had #42 in the middle GIF, but then I saw the pitcher had it too.  Thanks Jackie..  I hadn't really paid too much attention to BB #9's swing before but after some more observation he's got too many moving parts.  There's the toe tap before he gets his front foot down, which has to be synchronized with the little bat waggle he does.  Somebody should coach him to drop all of it and just be quiet in the box.  Like Melky!  We should all try to be a bit more like Melky..

I could also be making this up, but I noticed two things really.  The first is his elbows/arm.  When his swing is on, he stays squared to the plate and keeps his elbows bent in, but during "bad belt' swings, he turns his back to the pitcher more and keeps his arms extended back.  The second thing I noticed is the toe-tap.  When Belt is on, he doesn't have the extra toe tap that he has in his bottom two swings--probably because he is keeping his swing more balanced throughout the approach.  When he's not on, it looks like he's keeping too much weight on his back leg and not really following through as much.

But like I said, I could have made it all up.

Speaking of mechanics, Matt Cain's wiki page has a snapshot of him mid-pitch before his ML debut.  The amazing thing is it looks like a picture that could have been taken from his last start--mechanics are identical.  (For that matter, the picture could be from any start in the last 6 years).   When all this is said and done, I sure hope this kid is a serious HOF candidate.  Though I wonder...what would it take for that to actually happen?

Thanks for the GIFs, Chris.  I actually haven't been paying much attention to Belt's swing

Seems like in 2011 he was more upright, although not much more than this season. The last one certainly looks a bit more open.

I might be making this up, but his bat speed seems faster on the two "Good Belt" examples. He also has his front (right) elbow a little further back in this year than he did in 2011. Since everyone can talk to everyone these days (thanks to this wonderfully social internet), people feel the need to say more than just "Belt's struggling" which is what they would have said 10 years ago. Now there has to be a reason, either he's fat, or his mechanics are wanky, or he's overthinking, etc. Great post!
