2011: Posey, 2012: Panda.

Moral of the story?  Let's avoid the Marlins......a habitually average team that always plays SF well (see 1997 and 2003).

Never had even heard of a hamate bone until Panda started breaking them, but one thing is clear....Panda has some crappy hamate bones.

Yesterday's game was a real horror to watch. Giants tie a game versus the Marlins at home in the 9th inning but lose in extras, and a player leaves the game injured. With spectre of the DL haunting the team since last year, this was the one recurring nightmare that made fans afraid to go to sleep. With the bullpen noticeably less airtight than last year, the upcoming month looks less like a challenge and more like a struggle to survive.

Sabean's been taking a lot of risks this season, fielding his best offensive squad at the expense of fielding. He can't stop with those risks if the team is to remain competitive. Management needs to be open toward more flexible options, like starting Belt for extended periods of time and hope that he figures out how to be a consistently elite hitter. The alternative is an almost certain repeat of last year's futility, and by all accounts SF shouldn't come out as well as they did before last August. The competition is that much stiffer.
