Tim Lincecum is still a work in progress: I think the amount of panic that’s spent on Tim Lincecum is a little much at times, but Lincecum still hasn’t had what I would call a “crisp” start this year. In game one of today’s doubleheader, Lincecum did some good stuff (eight strikeouts) and some bad stuff (five walks). After five innings, Lincecum had already thrown 108 pitches (just 60 of which were strikes) and he was done for the day. I think it was Krukow that said “nothing’s been easy today” when describing Tim’s outing. I couldn’t agree more. Lincecum threw 23, 27, and 22 pitches in innings two through four and generally struggled with command the entire game. I still think he’ll figure stuff out, but he’s looked very un-Tim-like in the first few starts of this season.
Hector Sanchez is much better than Eli Whiteside and Chris Stewart: Considering that Eli Whiteside is currently batting .241/.267/.379 (in AAA, in the Pacific Coast League) and Chris Stewart is hitting (.300/.364/.400 in just a handful of plate appearances for the Yankees), and Hector Sanchez’s current slash of .280/.269/.400 doesn’t look all that bad. I think it’s still something to keep an eye on, but Sanchez’s long two-run homer in the 7th inning marked the first extra-base hit for the back-up catcher this year. Sanchez’s development path wasn’t exactly a standard progression, but he’s looking like he can hold his own so far. A few more walks would appease the dirty OBP fetishist inside me, though.
Nate’s SLG’ing is bonkers: Nate went 3-5 in both games of the doubleheader; everything combined, he finished the day with three singles, two triples, and a three-run blast. Nate is currently slugging a cool .744 — not bad for a guy that had a pretty terrible Spring Training. Also, noticeably abasement from both games today was Aubrey Huff. Part of me wonders if Bochy is starting to consider a best possible OF arrangement of Cabrera-Pagan-Nate with Belt and Pill at 1B. The other part of me is laughing at that part of me for ever thinking that Bochy will bench Huff. [Update: Looks like Huff was absent due to personal reasons. Best wishes to Huff and his family.]
Madison Bumgarner: Still good. Still blows more snot rockets than anyone, ever.
Country strong, you guys.
