Here at Bay City Ball we (the other Chris and I) will bring you roster breakdowns for each of the San Francisco Giants full season minor league affiliates. Today it’s the Advanced-A San Jose Giants.

Overall the club has a solid potential lineup, rotation, and bullpen. Of course the big names here are Andrew Susac and Joe Panik, as evidenced by their marquee presentation at the season preview event yesterday at San Jose Municipal Stadium.

I haven’t been told what the lineup or rotation order will be but I expect the team to employ a six man rotation. Augusta’s doing it (as you’ll read about tomorrow) and San Jose has done it in the past.

Here’s a handy dandy table of San Jose’s pitchers, complete with when and how they were acquired.

The one I’m really looking forward to is Josh Osich. He impressed me in the scouting videos I’ve seen on YouTube. I recall Taylor Rogers throwing well in Augusta, even though his strikeouts were low (86 in 154 2/3 innings).

Luis Rojas came over from the Mets organization, where he’s been since 2007. He pitched in the rookie leagues and spent the last two years in the Class-A South Atlantic League. He walks a lot of batters: 120 walks to 113 strikeouts over 147 2/3 innings over his career. I hope they can work him out in San Jose this year.

Shawn Sanford is the Opening Day starter, going up against Tyler Matzek in Modesto Thursday. If I had to guess, it would be Osich, Rogers, Ryan Bradley, Seth Rosin, and Justin Schumer behind Sanford. Edward Concepcion was a starter his entire career except for last season when he made 43 appearances, so he’s a possibility.

As you can see, catcher is sewn up for Susac. Dan Burkhart strikes out a lot. Jeff Arnold showed a bit of pop with six home runs and 23 RBIs in 268 at-bats last year in Augusta.

On this table and on the outfielders table I put their positions based on how many games they’ve played at the positions listed and/or the positions I’ve seen them play more than a few times. Panik played second base for the duration of his Arizona Fall League season. Carter Jurica played shortstop most games last year for the Giants when he was healthy. I expect those two to remain in those positions. Adam Duvall and Ricky Oropesa will make fine corner infielders. I’m especially excited to see if Duvall can continue his power hitting at the higher level and if Oropesa is able to hit more than he strikes out. I like how versatile Alex Burg is as a catcher and third baseman. I saw him play a bit here last year and he’s a very good utility guy to have around. Also, he had a really good year in Australian Winter League, if you take stock in those things.

Jarrett Parker repeating the level is kind of a drag but since he had a meh year at the plate last year it’s not surprising. I’m really excited to see Chris Lofton in center. He was part of UAB’s football recruiting class in 2010. He can walk well with 49 walks to 98 strikeouts in 418 at-bats last year.

I will be in San Jose for their home opener next Thursday. I’m planning to interview manager Andy Skeels about the team and I might talk to a few other guys if I can fit it in.
