Torres and Blanco are not comparables. As you noted Torres is/was older, but also Torres was released by 7 teams, twice by the Tigers, before signing with Giants. He was 31 when he signed; not exactly the traditional prime. Blanco has been traded twice and released once. Torres highest OPS+ was a 53 in 2003. He rocked a OPS+ of 5 for the Rangers in 2005. Granted, that's a small sample, but there was nothing to suggest even competency at the plate. Blanco's small sample OPS+ was 31, but he debuted with an 82 in 2008 at age 24, and had a composite OPS+ of 100 last season between Atlanta and KC.

Well that didn't take long.... The bad decision comes in the form of releasing Fonte and just letting someone like the Braves or Phillies pick him up for no return. Nicely Done Sab's!!!

I really don't understand why there's such a media bloodlust to constantly declare Hector Sanchez' catching "raw". I'd wager that most of the people who make those statements have no idea what they're really talking about, because even a cursory view of Giants catchers last season would tell you that Eli "Constant Backhand Stab" Whiteside is slightly a better option than a corpse. So it boils down to a simple question: "Do you want Chris Stewart's make believe offense starting 60-70 games at catcher this season". We've got three great pitchers and two other guys who've been around the block for a long time. For that group, I think its pretty overrated about their ability to put down the "one" sign. Sanchez is the best option, and its really not even close.

Without even looking at defensive metrics Fontenot is the nest of the three at shortstop and can also play 3rd base adequately. I don't see how they can trade him

Question: Is there a good stats article on "rushed" versus "developed" players? Specifically, I'm looking for something that shows that rushed players underperform their projections, while developed players overperform them, and then analyzes the magnitude of the discrepancy. Or maybe the real question is: what is the optimal time to promote a player? I ask because I am conflicted about my feelings towards using Hector Sanchez as a back up this season.

I don't think there is. However, there is such thing as the playing time penalty (players need reps to get better) and a young player can easily get saddled with a backup label if he does perform limited playing time.

My reaction when I first heard this was James Bond's reaction in Goldfinger when Q tells him his car has an ejector seat: "Trade Fontenot/Theriot?! You're joking!" Sabean: "I never joke about my work" Seriously though, I'm hoping/praying that this is just some silly rumor because if it's not, God help us all.

Good use of the 'who the hell is dan ortmeier' post tag. The Burriss thing is going to happen. And it's probably going to be terriblebad.

I was with you until the end, there -- why would trading Theriot away, then going with Burris until the fad passes and Fontenot can man the base acceptable ... but the same isn't true if they trade Fontenot and replace Burris with Theriot, especially when you say Theriot is the better player? Or are you concerned that they'll trade BOTH? Doubt they even could do that, even if they wanted to...

Worst: Trade Fontenot - Burris starts Bad: Trade Theriot - Burris starts Not Good, but Meh: Trade Fontenot -Theriot starts Just Meh: Trade Theriot - Fontenot starts
