@Brandon

Great article - except for the Matty Alou reference as a Giant - one of my favorite Pirates of all time - Alou/Clemente/Stargell - no wonder all Pirate fans live in the past!

So is Melky Cabrera a good hitter ? He will be an interesting lineup dynamic and I'm sure Bochy will bat him just about everywhere in the order except cleanup and 8th. Not only the 200 hits, but the 18 HRs with home games at Kaufmann stadium is respectable. Throw in 20 SB's in the AL for a player in his prime playing for a big contract, this could shape up to be a very productive season. The thing that usually makes hitters great however, is pitch recognition. Can he bring that BB% up from 5 and back in line with career average around 8? The splits are intriguing as well. Seems he hits pretty well as a right with perhaps a little more power from the right (at least the case last year). They'll need him to break up the lefties towards the bottom of the order. Melky = crucial cog in 2012

Agree with Robert, I am really interested in who had the best seasons. Keep up the good work!

Here you go: 1. Albert Pujols, +82 batting runs, 212 hits, 2003 2. Rod Carew, +79 batting runs, 239 hits, 1977 3. Mike Piazza, +72 batting runs, 201 hits, 1997 4. John Olerud, +72 batting runs, 200 hits, 1993 5. Wade Boggs, +68 batting runs, 200 hits, 1987 6. Hank Aaron, +68 batting runs, 201 hits, 1963 7. Albert Belle, +67 batting runs, 200 hits, 1998 8. Magglio Ordonez, +65 batting runs, 216 hits, 2007 9. Robin Yount, +65 batting runs, 210 hits, 1982 10. Wade Boggs, +63 batting runs, 214 hits, 1988 John Olerud is so underrated in my book.

Somehow Rod Carew is getting lost to contemporary fan. He really was an extraordinary hitter and its sad that his legacy doesn't seem to have had much sticking power. I suppose that's because his career ended right as the steroids era was picking up and chicks (and others) really do dig the long ball. Also he was never colrful or controversial as a personality so he doesn't get that memory push either. Great great player though.

I kind of felt the same way. After looking at some of these seasons, I decided to look over Carew's numbers. He had some really fantastic numbers. Six season with an OPS+ higher than 140; eight seasons with an OBP higher than .400; and, his 1977 season (.388/.449/.570) is all sorts of awesome. A .388 batting average? A .449 on-base percentage? Unreal.

A really interesting study, Chris. Could you also make a list with some discussion of the (positive) outliers, just out of interests sake?

Are the 58 stolen bases and 20 caught stealing numbers added to Juan Pierre's batting runs number in 2006? For the discussion of being an asset on offense, stolen bases should count for something. Standing on second, steal second base, and you've increased the chance that you will score in that inning (like a lead off double).

Batting Runs though is designed to compare the players abilities at the plate. The runs are not representative of the players scoring abilities, "Runs" is simply the name that they gave to the value. Baserunning doesn't enter into this stat because they are only trying to evaluate the player's hitting ability, the only outcomes that play in are whether he reached base, how did he reach base and how well/far did he reach base?

Baserunning isn't included in batting runs. It is, however, included in the WAR total.

Great article! But wouldn't the more relevant question be whether a good hitter can have a 200-hit season? I mean, even if a 200-hit season is valuable, the question is whether it's an indicator of the player being valuable in future seasons - in other words, is the fact that Melky had a 200-hit season a sign that he's going to be a good bat going forward? I suspect it's not but I haven't really looked at it. And, again, a really interesting article.

I thought about the same thing, ddr. I'll see if I can work on something this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion!

First player I thought of was definitely Juan Pierre.

Chad Billingsley is cute. Who wants to talk about this history of "Today"? I can go mano a mano on that one. I had no idea whether or not feet are attractive could be such a divisive issue. Brian McCann.
