Well there goes Hairston Jr. to the Dodgers - where in the world are they going to play all these guys? Ellis, Kennedy, Hairston? Ugh. I think Sabey Sabes is negotiatin' with the Bosox about either Lawrie or Scutaro.

And there goes Jerry Hairston Jr.--2 yr/$6MM with those dreaded dodgers. Looks like it's gonna be Crawford more and more every day...

Ummm.... Want to buy a y-axis. These graphs provide no easy way to compare one shortstop to another which is kinda the point here. I don't know what each segment in a vertical bar represents, and whether or not they're equivalent across different graphs... Furthermore some of the segments are smaller for some players than others.

If only there was some way to look up a comprehensive metric that incorporated offense, defense, baserunning and factored in games played. I think its easy enough to look up a WAR of your choosing at fangraphs or baseball reference and have away with it. It's nice to break down each player into disparate skill set evaluations. Nice Chris, I like it.

Maybe I'll post a revision. And thanks for the comments. I should have included a y-axis ... not doing so is a major sin against graphs. To clarify, I ran a search on FanGraphs from 2009-2011 for shortstops that had at least 1,000 PAs; I then ranked them from best to worst based on hitting, fielding, baserunning, and playing time; my search resulted in 34 shortstops; therefore, each bar (and they are all the same) represent one of the 34 shortstops. So, if you're looking at Reyes' graph, you'll see that his hit column is full of 32 bars -- that's how many shortstops he hit better than over this time period. The more bars, the better the ranking. I wanted to try and look at the "shape" of these graphs to compare the different shortstops.

I think they have to make a push for Rollins or Furcal. If Crawford is given the keys, then on Posey's rest days the Giants lineup will feature the dreaded Crawford, Stewart , Pitcher succession. That's a sure way to play 6-7 innings on offense. It would be nice to push Melky out of leadoff as well and drop Schierholtz to 8th for a nice rounded lineup capable of league average runs.

I have always been big on Furcal. The problem is that (and this is about to be a broken record, if not already) we simply don't have the money to bid on him for this offseason. Furcal could easily require (and certainly demand) a Renteria-like contract (2 yr/$18M I believe). That's what the market, and his track record, could provide. Given our $130M cap, and the fact that we're pretty much already there, I don't see the front office chasing him down. The real rub is that while the front office has mentioned some flexibility for an impact player, I don't think Furcal fits that description. Worse still, that flexibility has apparently disappeared in recent weeks, with the powers that be essentially saying "we won't bid or push hard for Beltran." Dude. As a giants fan, I think this is it as far as offseason acquisitions go. Still. I would love to see Josh Willingham in an SF uni next year. Just don't ask me to justify that.

I think they'll add a UTIL guy and maybe a scrapheap shortstop. I don't think they'll go after anyone expensive, or even moderately expensive.

I'm really starting to get a bad feeling about this off-season. It's taking on a decided 3rd or 4th place feel to me, though I promise to improve my attitude by ST.

Great chart. All your shortstop charts rock hard. If you expanded it to 4 years Furcal would look like more of a risk and Reyes would look slightly safer. Generally thyroids are pretty stable once they've been diagnosed and treated. The leg injuries are very likely to continue for both players. Rollins looks consistent and definitely the best fit for a straight shortstop if the money was there. With the number of teams chasing shortstops I bet Furcal gets priced out of good risk-reward territory. Hairston Jr. is the only one of these guys who has experience at 2nd and the definite willingness to play there, making him a pretty good fit. Morbidly curious if Theriot had any good rankings on this scale.

Thanks man! The Riot. I think he got a lot of PT is about all I can say. I agree, at a rate similar to his buddy The Hobbit or a minor league invite he'd be OK, but his D reminds me of Fontenot as well. He is a feisty dude who would make things interesting though. After last years debacle the one thing I really want from any dumpster dive vet is good defense. Because of the need to get 50 games at 2nd (maybe more?) as well as caddy the pretty boy at short, the Giants actually have 2 needs like you said, the UTIL and the scrapheap shortstop. I'm leaning Hairston because of that, the two birds with one stone. If Reyes has really gone for to FLA for 6/105MM things might start shaking out quick. And we might be stuck looking at... The Riot!

furcal did not hit so great after coming back from injury last season.

Really makes you wish the Giants were showing more interest in Rollins and Furcal!

Good analysis and graphically depicts the typical bottom feeding that the Giants engage in. The Giants have one impact bat (Sandoval) and hopefully Posey. There are 5 impact bats out there if you include Beltran. All at positions where the Giants have big holes that have been big for a long time and holes that have prevented them from reaching the post-season except for the fluky contribs of 3 dfa'd d/hs.
