Giants extend Sabean and Bochy

The Giants executed a pair of long-anticipated moves Tuesday by extending the contracts of general manager Brian Sabean and manager Bruce Bochy through 2013 with club options for 2014.

“Brian and Bruce are certainly two of the finest professionals at their respective positions in all of baseball,” Baer said in a statement. “They have effectively built and fostered a winning tradition at all levels of our organization. I have no doubt that they will achieve continued success for the Giants in the coming years and beyond.”

Both Sabean and Bochy were under contract until the end of 2012. This deal secures them into 2013 with an option that covers 2014.

UPDATE: Baggs has some quotes from Sabean during today’s conference call.

The common theme: we’re probably done upgrading the offense.

“There won’t be any big splash,” Sabean said. “Our pitching is our gold standard. We have to make sure we take care of that commodity first.”

So, the Giants’ game-plan for next year is basically this: everyone who sucked or was hurt last season will do better. Done and done!

I don't understand why top offensive free agents won't sign with the Giants. If the ballpark is the main reason, then close the gap in triple's alley. Who wouldn't want to play for a championship contending team with great fans, a weak division, and elite pitching? Sabean and Baer need to open up the checkbooks and pay for premium hitting talent, because there aren't any Buster Poseys in the minor leagues to save the team.

I think what transpired with ownership and neukum at the end of last season showed us that Sabean and likely Baer too would love to open up check books...but ownership group wanted to save monies for a "rainy day"...vs. double down on 2010 success and once-in-a-generation pitching dominance. The issue is this...as long as games continue to sell out...what incentive does ownership have to upgrade payroll? I dont support this idea...Im much more in the camp of "add more wood to the fire now" to create a dynasty now. But until fans vote with their feet...ownership will continue to bank on strong pitching, desirable park, weak division and the future funds of Zito and Rowand to utilize when they are freed up. Issue will be when/if the division structure collapses and mediocre team cant get into playoffs by winning a weak division. That will necessitate ownership rethink their strategy.

What "rainy day" is Giants ownership planning for? I'm sure Baer is fully aware that the Giants "window of opportunity" is right now. I truly believe this core group of Giants players can win another World Series in 2012-14 with a league average offense. If Sandoval, Posey, and Belt all hit in 2012 that has the makings of a league average offense IMO.

OK--that's numerous statements now that the offense is done being upgraded. Does this mean that the hope of signing Beltran is just a thing of the past? Do we even have 3 (preferably 5 or 6) OF's on our roster for next year? Cabrera, Torres, Schierholtz (Belt?) and....? Minor leaguers? Not good.
