Snyder and Doumit possess that intangible Giant sense because both...are so mediocre or less. Is this the best we can fantasize about then the reality must be so much worse. I had hoped to use the off season as a means of recuperating and dreaming...instead...I am reading more and more about a potential cast of new failures.

One of the biggest mistakes we made last season was not upgrading the backup catcher position. With Hector Sanchez not yet ready for duty at the MLB level, we need more of an offensive threat from the catcher's position, not to mention the best defense available. Doumit will not play in SF because of his poor defensive skills. Chris Synder could be an excellent option. I hope the Giants are talking to his agent within 3 seconds after the 3 day timeframe following the end of the World Series. We need a backup who can give us 40 - 60 games with defensive and offensive skills.

Charts and graphs should make the data easier to understand, not harder. This chart/graph is not helpful.

Never too early for rosterbation. Stewart can start the season as backup, let Hector Sanchez get those all important AAA innings under his belt and he can step in when Stewart proves inadequate. If the Giants are going to offer arbitration to Sanchez, pickup Affeldt's option (or renegotiate), and sign a free agent such as Rollins or Beltran, then they sure better be able to save some coin on the back up catcher and and utility infielders.

Ronny Polino is a DFA candidate - mashes lefties and was a Giant for a couple hours! Kelly Stoppach has that 3.2MM option - the Rays may decline that if they don't trade pitching. He mashes lefties and has a beard! The switch hitting is rare, but Doumit is should not be a catching candidate. Snyder seems very fragile. Although Stewart's defense was strong, they need a catcher for 50 games next year. Might need a better bat. But not at expense of clankmitt.

Seems irrelevant considering Chris Stewart is sure to be the back-up in 2012.

Stewart seems likely to be back, but the question is should he be the backup? Posey is coming back from a significant injury and if he has any kind of setback, it will be the 2011 situation all over again. The Giants need to be proactive with their catching problem.

re: Posey's return from injury, its one reason I hope they don't rely on him to be their cleanup hitter. If he goes down, or even has a slower than optimal return from the injury, the Giants offense will again be doo-doo. I started off thinkling I'd like to see the Giants pursue Willingham to play LF and bat 4th. But the cost of the Type A pick, plus the need/desire to replace him for defense late in games is less than optimal. Maybe a Beltran return, as long as he agrees to play LF, might be the best course of action after all if they can get him for 3/39-ish. Getting back tot he backup catcher issue, I'd be OK with Stewart if they upgrade enough @ SS, CF - let Hector Sanchez continue to develop at AAA - he could be a decent trade chip down the line
