Conor Gillaspie is behind Chris Dominguez or not making it at all? Maybe I idolize him a little too much, but this is too much in the other direction.

Gillaspie laid an egg as a prospect. I've never been super impressed with him, starting when he played in San Jose. His range at third wasn't the best. He hasn't done enough to prove to me that he's worth a spot on a 30 deep prospect list.

I'm probably one of about 5 people not related to him that would disagree with that assessment. :-P But I sincerely think he's one of the better prospects we have, maybe not as high-ceiling as some though.

Don't you think that's a little harsh on Crawford? Just because his bat isn't MLB ready yet doesn't mean it never will be, and he doesn't have to hit too much to be an asset given his glove...

I think the org is being too harsh to Crawford. If they're seriously thinking Keppinger and Cabrera are worth more than Crawford, then that tells me they don't think of him as a prospect. I had to take that into consideration.

Am I the only one who thinks Crawford could be the answer in the future? I know he wasn't spectacular at the plate by any means (.190/.275/.261). But he wasn't even expected to make it to the majors until next year at the earliest. We know he is solid defensively, so I'd like to see him have another chance in the majors.

I would like to see Crawford get another chance too. I think he did fine for what the Giants asked of him. But like I said in the piece and below in a comment, the org has appeared to give up on him. That's a damning sign.

Still no Ehire? WOW

That's probably the most surprising thing about this list. The lack of 2011 draftees I can accept as a philosophical difference, although I don't think it's an accurate reflection of reality. The emphasis on bullpen arms is also a philosophical difference. I just don't think most bullpen prospects have enough upside to make them viable prospects who will have a significant impact on the parent club.

Still no Brett Pill? WOW

Pill's not a prospect. We covered that last week.

My two cents! Marte, Fairley, Bochy, and Heston probably don't make my top 20. Bochy is kinda interesting, as is Marte, but Fairley has been a bust since he became a Giants' prospect. Unless Fairley is playing mind altering defense, it's hard to see him as anything other than filler right now. Side-note: Any reason why you don't have some of the newer draftees on your list? Susac, Crick, Oropesa?

Totally agree on Quick's distaste for Fairley. I don't think he has any chance to make an impact at the major league level. I have a hard time seeing him even contribute in Triple-A.

I evaluated guys more on their 2011 performance. Susac and Oropesa haven't played--or if they have, I didn't see them in my stats database. Those guys will get consideration on our real 2012 prospect list.

^^ agree - although of the four guys you listed, I think Heston has the most promise. To me, Susac makes my top 10. I've watched a lot of video on this kid, canon arm, and to out of context quote Mike Krukow, "He can hit" ... with power.

I'm so glad to see Heston at #20. He has become the "ace" of San Jose's rotation with Wheeler leaving, but has been great all season. Love his K numbers, and low walk numbers. No one seems to talk about him as any kind of prospect, though, so I'm pleasantly surprised to see him in your top 20. I've seen him pitch several times, including this past Sunday where he had 8 K's, but I am too inexperienced of a "scout" to render an opinion on his mechanics, delivery, etc. If I recall correctly, his velocity seems to hover around 91/92 (based on the guns the charting pitchers have; the stadium gun seems to be about 3 mph slower), but I'm not positive.

I don't even bother with watching velocity in SJ, because the stadium gun is never reliable and I can't always peep on scouts/player guns consistently. I really want to buy a speed gun for myself but those suckers are expensive.

Half the time, they don't even put the radar reading on the sign at all. It's kind of creepy when I'm leaning over a guy's shoulder to look at the radar gun. You probably do need one -- ebay? ;-)
