I think that last point is really critical. Many will say Zito and Sanchez are acceptable 5th starters, and for an offense that's on pace for 750+ runs that's probably true, but the Giants aren't built that way. Even more than last year, these Giants have to keep their opponents to 3 runs or less to have a chance to win because they aren't going to get to 5 very often (and even 4 is a stretch lately). So when the 5th starter gives up 5-6 runs in 4+IP the whole team knows the game is over and it just sucks the life out of the team and the fans. Bigger picture the body language of the team has just been awful. Whether that's a cause or effect of the poor results lately is up for debate. Either way it's noticeable from a team that down the stretch last year and for 2-3 months carried themselves like they expected to win every game. The Brandon Belt horse has been beaten to death so I'm not going to get into that too much except to say this: sometimes youthful energy is every bit as valuable as veteran experience. I really think the best teams (last year's Giants included) have a nice blend of the two and right now this team is nothing but veterans and Madison Bumgarner (who acts like a veteran). A little "happy to be here and soaking it all in" and some energy might go a long way for this group.

You don't bring in a superstar without throwing team chemistry way off. Can Bochy re-chem his magic soon enough? 2 weeks has done nothing but show that it ain't goin' to happen too soon. I didn't like the trade from before the start.

Chemistry? Really? Did Beltran bring too many electrons into the clubhouse? The only way Beltran has been detrimental to the club is by not producing. I understand the concept of a player having such a bad attitude that he can affect the team (see Zambrano), but by all accounts Beltran is decent teammate and swell guy. You can fairly criticize the Beltran trade as being short-sighted (giving up on a potential ace) or not addressing a need position (did the Giants really need another OF?), but citing "chemistry" seems so 2001ish.

When you play Kepp and Cabrera against righties everyday and bat them 2nd and 5th/6th respectively, how could you expect any less. OPS = runs scored, those two are the antithesis of OPS. Not to mention that they are DP machines and when they do get hits, it's one base at a time cause their hits are rarely deep. I like the Beltran trade until I realized it was at the expense of benching Brandon Belt. Is Beltran really that much of an upgrade over Belt against righties? The Giants basically replaced their 2nd best hitter with a new 2nd best hitter. I'd bet they'd have pretty similar stats if they both played the rest of the season. I'm thinking Belt would be around .260/.390/.455, against right handed pitching, perfect number 2 hitter. Here's to the future... In advance welcoming future Giants' FA signings, Yuni Betancourt, Alex Gonzalez, Corey Patterson, Alexis Rios and Omar Infante.
