I don't buy into the Brandon Belt hype, but I understand your frustration with fielding old, tired veterans. They fall for the same routine tricks because they're inflexible and perhaps too egotistically confident in their abilities. Huff projects a good image, but his behaviour at the plate is exactly the same as Rowand, Ross and Tejada. Curious how so many players like that can find their way to San Francisco. The Giants season is going up in smoke, and players like that seem like moths drawn to the flame. The only things not on fire are the bats. However, you're not giving the Giants enough credit. They value their farm system enough to not empty it for players to win this season. The Giants seriously believe Gary Brown is real and will inherit CF from Torres, so a Michael Borne isn't worth that Faustian pact with Houston. Same goes for Francisco Peguero over Hunter Pence, and Brandon Belt over Beltran. But the truth is the Giants have a history of raising prospects who only succeed in the minor leagues - it seems like they only produce superstars (Posey, Bumgarner, Sandoval) or below average bench players (Schierholtz, Velez, Burriss, Ishikawa). Even solid minor league players like Conor Gillaspie seem to fade away in the Giants lineup when given consistent playing time, and Belt isn't any different. He has the pedigree of a Giants superstar, but was tamed by major league pitching. Let's face it, Belt had his big chance early in the season and failed to even be average, let alone meet those high expectations. The Giants brass were desperate for hitting when they called him up (a desperation that pales compared to now) even though they figured he wasn't ready. And he wasn't, and may never will be. I was never a fan of the Mark DeRosa deal, but I don't interpret it as preferring a veteran to a rookie. I see it as trying to do something different, a hope not unlike dumping a bunch of puzzle pieces in a blender and gambling that they'll assemble into a complete picture. The Giants think DeRosa might be able to hit. The Giants know Belt can't. Belt needs that playing time, and needs to work out in the minors until the day when everything clicks for him. That day isn't today, tomorrow, or anytime this year.
