Hmm, the goal of a trade is to make your team better, not worse. the only thing that Upton's bat would secure is the title of worse offense in the majors. Beltran with a Nov. 15 expiration date stamped on his forehead. The 2012 version will look a lot different with Buster back, Darren Ford and perhaps Burkes running the bases, hopefully Freddy both back and productive, and Belt on the team for good.

I'm blown away you'd rather have B.J. Upton. First of all, I'd love to see data on how many 19 year old pitching prospects with a great fastball but no command actually pan out to be of value within the following 3-4 years. I would say less than 15% just off the top of my head... if that. And sorry, but Upton is a downgrade for this year and the years to come. He's gotten progressively worse each year for 5 straight seasons in his prime years now, that's a big red flag for me. He's a right handed hitter that hits lefties better. We have that already in Cody Ross and Aaron Rowand, don't need another. In fact, those kind of guys are a dime dozen. And unless the Giants are gonna be spending like the Sox and Yanks, I don't see them competing in 3-4 years from now. Now is their time. They are stuck with Zito for 3 more seasons, that means they only have about 90 mil to spend in their budget. How are they gonna resign Lincecum, Cain, Wilson, Posey, Sandoval, Sanchez, Belt, Romo, Lopez, Bumgarner and Volgelsong for under 90 mil total over the next 4 seasons? - Right now they have them all at BARGAIN rates - And they still are at 110 mil. They aren't gonna be able to resign all of them, period. Now is the time to win cause their farm system is pretty thin. 4 years from now, it's rebuild time... Unless of course they start spending 150 mil a year, which I can't see happening.

Buster Olney is reporting that the giants are on the 1 yard line in terms of securing Beltran. Apparently Zack Wheeler is the centerpiece of the deal. Scott Boras is Beltran's agent that guy always gets his players phat cash. I really dont see us ponying up the dough to keep him after the season, he is having an amazing year and will command too much cash.

What are the chances that Beltran (assuming he become a Giant for the rest of the season) will sign a free-agent deal with the Giants after the season ends?

Beltran in a heartbeat. I'm not sure I'd want them to get Upton for free. It's ok to make a trade just for this year, as we can assume the Giants offense will get better next year on its own (Posey, Belt) and we have lots of money coming off the books in the near future. Get Beltran and give the team a legit chance to repeat.
