First choice is Pence...young, energetic, hitter, clutch and decent glove...and signed for another year. Don't trade Wheeler or Sanchez, but rather, Burriss,Casilla and minor leaguer. Next is Hernandez at catcher...again we can get him for not much. Then get Adams from the Pads and we're good to go!

You neglected to mention the possibility of an Aaron Rowand for Andrew McCutchen swap...Pirates are desperate for Offense.

I suspect people think that Pence is more of an upgrade than he actually is. Also, the only thing you'll get for Burriss, Casilla and a minor leaguer is a horselaugh.

Jeff Keppinger was a big oversight on this list (I didn't think of him either, but that's because I count on you to do my thinking for me). At first glace, he's essentially Jamey Carroll without the Dodger stink. Now, if they could just find a catcher...and I hope they don't really consider the corpse of Ivan Rodriguez a possibility.

The Giants have been notorious over the years for ruining promising young players by not providing consistent playing time and then complaining about their offensive production (Feliz, Frandsen, Estallella, Torrealba, etc). I just can't see any replacement catcher providing a meaningful offensive boost that wouldn't be offset by a lack of knowledge of the pitching staff. The biggest upgrade would be to get a more consistent threat in the OF to replace Torres. He doesn't seem to know how to make a productive out, and the Giants are set at RF and LF with Schierholtz and Ross.

I really don't get all the negativity surrounding Stewart and Whiteside at catcher. Sure they are never going to be a long term option at the position, but why would you trade anyone or spend any significant amount for another guy who can't get a starting job anywhere else? Whiteside is coming around after a terrible start in the first two months (7-41, .171 BA). Since the beginning of June, he is 21-77 (.273 BA), which is not exactly tearing it up, but is just as good or better than the average catcher. There are only a handful of catchers with more than 125 plate appearances hitting better than .250 (11 in the NL - if you include Posey). Regular playing time is what is going to help him improve his offense.

Add Emilio Bonifacio to the SF Giant wish list. Low-cost option, versatility, lots of range, speed, hitting .290, plays in the NL East.

"Improving the roster without mortgaging the future", Rory. Spoken like a potential GM. Trouble is, you may have to give up something in order to get what you need. In other words, you'll have to take a risk. I'm not convinced re your analysis, Rory, because you're too darnn conservative. Nope, you wouldn't make it as GM in my book!

You cut my quote. "... without mortgaging the future TOO TERRIBLY." I'm not opposed to losing a prospect, even a very good one, if it gives them a chance to repeat as World Series champions. It's a balance. I'd move Wheeler in the right deal, but I think moving Belt would be a mistake. He's an offensive upgrade at zero cost.

the only really nice thing about having a couple gaping holes in the lineup is that big improvements (i.e. average or slightly below average players) can be had for very marginal prospects.

Thanks for the reply, Rory. Okay, I failed to note the "too terribly" part. This means that were you the GM, you would be absolutely prepared to deal but you would not mortgage the Giant's future by trading for a prospect now. I agree. In fact, I'm going to recommend that the Giants hand you a contract as "trade consultant", that's how much I now believe in "Pappafly". One question: Are you prepared to give up your current life on behalf of the Giants.

More the latter. I think the cost would be too high, and that's assuming he could even be had. He's also not necessarily within the mold of what the Giants definitely need. Really nice player, though.

Curious why Michael Bourne's name is crossed out at the top? Am I missing something? Just got back from a vacation over the wknd...Is he no longer available, or would the Astros simply expect too much for him?

Agreed! Pence and Upton are such better options than Beltran. I don't see Sabean even considering a deal in which he gives up a top prospect for two months of production without even a compensatory draft pick to show for it at the end.
