Great post and I agree that his bad outings are magnified by anemic offense. I was just arguing with my friend about if we would trade Sanchez for a bat and we came to the conclusion that it would take a really really good bat for us to be comfortable. I couldn't come up with someone realistic b/c I feel Sanchez is so valuable to the Giants specifically. Not to discredit his individual talent but I feel that given the park and pitching staff/coaches, SF is a really good place for Sanchez to be. I don't think he does what he's done for us on another team. I don't really have the stats to back that opinion up but either way I'm glad he's part of the rotation. Plus with his new doubles power can we really afford to keep him out of the lineup every 5th day?

he's a number two starter for Giants...but only cuz he's a lefty...really a four starter here. Truth is he'd be a legitimate #2 on virtually all other teams outside of Philadelphia. Some what related...what am I missing about obstacles in trading Zito...if the SF agrees to pay his contract in full...why wouldnt they be able to trade him for something/anything that they can use? I mean trade him fully paid for the best bat boy in the league if need be but just get something of use for him...have to believe a fully paid for and healthy Zito is worth something that the giants can use?

Part of my brain knows he's a really valuable guy to have in the rotation. The other part knows he can be frustrating to watch. I generally don't have trouble reconciling those two parts -- though his last start was kinda painful. I still like Sanchez. I think trading him to make room for Zito could be a dangerous proposition. I absolutely hate the headcase argument.

I think it's fair. His walk problem makes it so that one bad bounce or defensive mistake turns the game into a disaster. It's also asking a lot of even a good bullpen to keep in these close games for four innings at a time. When he doesn't go deep into games he's going to need more good innings out of your Motas and Affeldts than is good for a team's chances.

Can you really call his outings bad though? Sure he walks a lot of batters and doesn't go deep into ball games, but he hasn't given up more than 3 runs in his last 4 starts. He hasn't given up more than 3 earned runs in 5 starts. He is giving up a lot of walks and is digging himself in to holes too often. But like all the Giants staff, he has the ability to pitch out of trouble. The problem is the lack of run support makes his mistakes that more magnified. Just thought that needed to be mentioned. Everyone is so quick to jump off the Jonathan Sanchez ship when half of these games that are lost with him on the mound should be wins with decent run support.
