Why the Giants Shouldn’t Acquire Ivan Rodriguez

The rumor: the Giants have contacted the Nationals about Ivan Rodriguez

In list format, here’s why they shouldn’t do that.

1. He’s terrible at hitting

Over the past three years, in 896 at-bats, Pudge has hit .253/.284/.364, or if you like OPS+, that’s a score of 73. Even if you consider that the bar on offense is lower for catchers – OPS for catchers in the NL has been around .710 over the past three seasons – Pudge still comes up short on offense with a .648 OPS over that timeframe. A quick look at Pudge’s graph page on FanGraphs, and you get some additional frightening information: power down, strikeouts up, wOBA down.

2. Is he really an upgrade over Whiteside?

Yes, that Eli Whiteside; the guy that’s never, ever, been able to hit. Whiteside’s futility with the bat is well documented. And yet, he’s probably not much worse than Pudge is these days. I tweeted that over the past three seasons – in admittedly much less PT – Whiteside has hit just as well (or just as poor) as Rodriguez. The ZiPS updated projection for Rodriguez has him at a .274 wOBA for the year. The ZiPS updated projection for Whiteside is .281. Ouch.

Defense is another question. I think we all know that catcher defense is a fickle thing to try and quantify. There’s a chance that Rodriguez is probably better on defense than Whiteside. I’d be willing to give him +5 runs on defense vs. Whiteside’s +2.5 runs. The difference, in my opinion, probably isn’t worth the cash or prospects. If the 39-year-old’s (!) defense has degraded to average, or even below, he really doesn’t make sense over Whiteside.

3. The Giants should try for better

Easier said than done, I know. But acquiring Rodriguez is depressing. The Giants have lost a key part of their offense (and defense) and replacing it with an old, and ineffective player is just really, really depressing. The team will be unable to replace Posey, that much is true, however, the Giants might as well use some combination of Whiteside-Stewart rather than Rodriguez. If the team is determined to find someone other than Whiteside-Stewart, you have to make it an upgrade over, you know, Whiteside-Stewart.

So after watching Whitside and Stewart hit this weekend, what do you think it would take to get Pudge or Doumit?

What ever happened to the idea that the Pirates are shopping Ryan Doumit?

Hey, King, love your work! Doumit is kind of interesting -- his bat is pretty good for a catcher, but most defensive studies rate him near the bottom for defense. I think he's a trade candidate out of Pittsburgh. I have no idea if the Giants would be interested.

Rodriguez is not well-regarded as a pitcher-handler/pitch-caller...wants fastballs to make his throwing easier.

I have no interest in Pudge becoming a Giant. Maybe I hate that he has killed us in the past (he even threw out "The Bullet" this year), or that he is even older than Tejada, but I also think Whiteside will handle the staff well, play good defense and not hit just as well as Pudge would/wouldn't. The real problem in my opinion is still addressing shortstop. That's where we can soften the blow from Posey going down. There is a lot of room for improvement on both the defensive and offensive end. I'm excited to see Crawford get a chance today. I know he can't hit but wouldn't it be nice if we had a shortstop that made outs on defense and only one out when he was at the plate? I mean we won a World Series with just pitching. Maybe pitching and defense will help us this year?

Crawford had a nice game today...grand slam and a walk. I'll take it.

There is no way to short change this injury. It is absolutely a worst case scenario, we lose our best ascending player to an injury that he could theoretically never come back the same from. As well as our best connection to the pitching staff. I hate to make it seem like the end of the world, but how can we come back from this?

Any chance Pablo gets moved back to Catcher when he comes back from his own injury???

I'm okay with Pudge if it means that the Giants trade one or all of the following for him: Rowand-2, Zits and/or Affeldt (yes you've made this list Jeremy.) Other than that, I'd much rather trade for Beltran or Reyes and try to make up for the offense that way. Hell they could even trade for David Wright and move Panda to 1B and Huff to Left Out.

Speaking of Huff "Left Out", why is Bochy only using Belt situationally or OF? Haven't we learned that a top prospects development is slowed by only being used marginally in the majors? I'm good w/an IF of Sandoval (upon return), Crawford, Sanchez and Belt. Upgraded D would help our stellar pitching staff! Not to mention that Belt's bat is an improvement over Huff's. Someone help me understand why Belt is not an everyday player and this weird devotion to Aubrey Huff??

Bork, Bork, Bork, Bork. In summation: there is no explanation, Belt being used situationally is criminal.

Don't forget that Sandoval can catch.

He could catch, at one point, but that seems unlikely now. I'd be VERY surprised if the Giants ever move him back there.

I don't imagine that it's going to happen... although I admit, that was also one of the first lineup workarounds I thought of, too. The "this would TOTALLY work in a video game!" school of roster management.

"terrible at hitting"? sounds like a Giant!

If the vote doesn't end up in 100 percent "No," I give up.

O, I forgot, the question was rhetorical, but the poll-thingy made Chris choose two options.

Hmmmm....very tempted to vote yes, but I enjoy you're writing so I won't. Also, as I mentioned below I am favor of trading for Pudge as long as the deal involves Rowand-2, Zits or Affeldt, but I would trade any one of them for an inanimate object at this point.
