I really wonder about how the market is going to develop. The way I think of it is this: Wheeler is probably one of the 50 best prospects in baseball (and with graduations to the majors so far this year he may have moved up into the top 25). So, how likely is it that somebody is going to offer up one of those 25 or so guys in front of him? In fact, I'll do this systematically and actually look at this year's BA List. Wheeler was 55. Of the 54 guys in front of him: a) 25 are from non-contenders, mostly the Royals (the only team I counted that could even remotely be considered a contender is Seattle, but I feel confident that they wouldn't offer up Pineida or Ackley); b) 16 belong to teams that don't really have an opening at SS (Yankees, Phillies, Rockies, Dbacks, Rangers, Cleveland, Tigers, White Sox were the teams I considered there); and c) 4 belong to Tampa Bay who I doubt would want to take on the $$$ of Reyes or pay the prospects, even if they did give up on Brignac who is, after all, just killing them with a 15 OPS+ that has to put him on the short list of worst everyday players in the majors. Adding in Brandon Belt, that would seem to eliminate 45 of the 54 prospects who were considered better than Wheeler going into this season. The other 9 are: Mike Trout, Julio Teheran, Aroldis Chapman, Shelby Miller, Freddie Freeman, Randall Delgado, Mike Minor, Billy Hamilton, Jose Igelsias. I'm just going to assume that Trout and Miller would be untouchable. Four of the remaining 7 are Braves and two are Reds, both of whom would be significantly improved by picking up Reyes. But in the end, it looks to me like if Atlanta wanted him they're in a great position to offer the best deal. But aside from that, I just don't see anybody with a better piece than Wheeler who'd be willing to give that piece up. So I'd just take Wheeler off the board and start talking about packages: throw out a group of say, Surkamp, Peguero, Runzler, Culberson, Noonan and say pick three. That's probably a pretty damn good return for Reyes and I wouldn't be terribly surprised if it ends up being as good as or better than what NY ultimatelyg ets.

If you would have asked me yesterday if I make the trade, my answer would have been, "HELL NO", but after reading Adam Foster's report and seeing the slow-mo video of Wheeler's delivery I would now say, "maybe". The main reason why is that one of the things I liked the most is seeing Wheeler's free and easy delivery in which he really seemed to use his length to his advantage. I imagine 95 from him probably feels like 98 from other guys. However, the hitch in his delivery coupled with the small "inverted W" makes Wheeler more of a gamble from my perspective. I still totally believe in the stuff, but if he's going to blow his arm out I would at least entertain trading Wheeler for Reyes, especially if the Giants think there's any chance that they could sign Reyes in the offseason.

Mercy, my knees buckled when watching that gif.

I would do it, unless I thought the Mets would give him up for less. I'd also try my damnedest to sign Reyes. There just aren't that many impact SS out there, and I'm bearish on the guys in the Giants pipeline.

I honestly think there's no way Reyes would sign a deal with the Giants before testing the free agent market. Check out the SS list for free agents and then come back to me. Yuniesky Betancourt MIL * Rafael Furcal LAD J.J. Hardy BAL John McDonald TOR Augie Ojeda ARZ Jose Reyes NYM Ramon Santiago DET Marco Scutaro BOS * Jack Wilson SEA Yuck.

pretty sure if I was a GM, Reyes would sense my sweaty desperation.

The 18th Edible Arrangement basket you sent him might have been overkill.

Oh, and I'd have to think long and hard about trading Wheeler for Reyes. Wheeler is by no means a sure thing (what pitching prospect is?) but I hate, hate, hate the idea of trading blue chip(s) for a rental. At least in the Greinke deal, the Brewers retained control of him for a couple of seasons. With Reyes, he's gone at the end of the year.

I just feel like Reyes represents a great way to capitalize on the Giants' current window of opportunity to compete for championships. Not only is he far superior defensively to any SS we currently have on the major league roster, but he also would fit in right at the top of the order for years to come. As much as I like to wish, Torres isn't young, and he would be a great asset to have lower in the order with Reyes at the top. Also, as excited as I am for Gary Brown, there's no guarantee that he pans out, as is the case with all prospects. I say try and make the trade with Wheeler (or Brown) as the centerpiece and then immediately start negotiating a long-term deal the minute he walks into the clubhouse. If he does ultimately leave, they still get the draft pick compensation.

>> but he also would fit in right at the top of the order for years to come. Or the remainder of the season before he leaves for FA. Reyes is a huge upgrade at SS, I just don't like rentals. That's probably not a very reasonable position, and it's why I don't run a pro sports team, I just hate the idea. Also, trading Gary Brown? /GASP!

Yep, you're right. It's something worth exploring, but maybe something Sabes backs off of if he feels 1) Reyes will bolt after 2011 and 2) Adrianza or Crawfor has a shot at ok-ish-ness. In any event, not an easy position to be in. But, it's his bed to lay in, having signed Tejada this winter.

You're on a roll, Rory! Ah, the dangers of small sample sizes. Tejada's recent stretch seems dead cat bounce-ish to me. Hopefully there's more bounce left.
