Our favorite writer and projection machine Dan Szymborski has an ESPN insider article that a lot of Giants fans probably won’t like. The whole article is available to insiders, but the gist is that the Giants have some obstacles to repeating, mainly lack of starting pitching depth, injury risk, and regression from key offensive players. There’s more, but I think those are the key points.
I imagine this will set of a round of RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE. But I think these are legitimate risks, particularly the pitching injuries. I’m a little more sanguine about the offense, not because I don’t think anyone will decline, but because a rebound from Sandoval and a full season free of some of last year’s lineup dead weight may end up cancelling out the regression (but also, maybe not).
I think it’s important to bear in mind, that they don’t just hand you a pennant because you won last year. Baseball is a game where you have to improve just to keep up with everybody else.
