Chris and Otis thank you for this. I for one have been seeking some kind of way to get more informed about Giants prospects and this is a great start. The humor is also appreciated

I've got my arms crossed on Culby, too, but it's more in befuddlement then anything else. Seems pretty obvious I should right him off as one of the many many annual Cal League mirages, especially with the k/bb rates, but the scouts don't seem to be scoffing at him with the appropriate level of gusto, which makes me wonder what I'm missing. He is a former 1st rounder who's still pretty young, which makes writing him off misguided. In the end, I think you guys have him about right, with the chance of a big move up if he can go to Richmond and avoid a Noonan-esque implosion. I like this 15-11, though I think I have Kickham at 10 (or would if I ever bothered to actually make a list). Seems about right on Culberson, Casilla, Sanchez and Crawford to me, all of whom are guys you can squint at and see a productive major league player, but you really really have to squint to get much else out of them. That suggests reasonable depth to the system anyway.

I'm glad to hear you agree, Roger. He was a frustrating guy to try to rank. He undoubtedly has upside but I just don't think either of us could quite believe in that he's already broken out. I'm sure we'll basically know one way or the other about him next year.

I think the excitement over Culberson is that he finally started hitting after, as written, two years of nothing. And a power hitting MI is pretty interesting usually. That gives hope for the future where there was none before. Another thing to note is that his K% is close to being good, 18.1% and ideally you want it under 15%, but good hitters can survive at 18.1%. Also, while the Cal League is a hitter's league, one must also recall that San Jose has been an extreme pitcher's park for a long time, and screws with our hitters. Why the Giants don't fix it, particularly now that they are owners of the team, is a crying shame, it should not cost that much to fix the background. He hit .299/.362/.465/.827 on the road: still not great but better in context with the league. In addition, one must remember that he was only 20 YO playing in a league of 23 YO pitchers (on average), giving up three years of experience and physical development. Other prospects his age and rough OPS range gives some hope that Culberson can make majors and maybe contribute: 2008 Josh Bell 21 .827 OPS LAD Hank Conger 20 .850 OPS LAA 2007 Travis Denker 21 .841 OPS SF Chris Nelson 21 .861 OPS COL Blake DeWitt 21 .804 OPS LAD Mike Saunders 20 .866 OPS SEA 2006 Emilio Bonifacio 21 .824 OPS ARI Chase Headley 22 .823 OPS SD Casey Craig 21 .816 OPS SEA John Jaso 22 .813 OPS TBR Enough known names to engender hope, enough nobodies to keep the arms crossed people happy. The arms crossed will have him lower on their prospect list, the ones who were impressed will have him much higher. He is still very iffy, but put himself clearly on the "ones to watch" list with his 2010 performance, including AFL. It may be a hitter's league too, but still pretty good to be among leaders in the league. He still needs to improve defensively but hopefully another season at a position he never played before would help him improve defensively. He has jumped ahead of Noonan, in my opinion, at 2B depth and prospecthood.

I just don't understand the Brandon Crawford man-crush? In two seasons in the Eastern League he has struggled to hit. I just don't see Crawford being able to hit enough in the majors to be anything other than a 8th inning replacement guy.

Ours or other prospect hounds? We've got him ranked pretty low, compared to other lists. Chris has officially been excommunicated from the First Church of Crawfish.

The offensive bar is extremely low at SS. Crawford won't ever be an impact player but, with his defense, he'll be a useful player while he's under team control.

Yeah, I keep coming back to how thin the crop of SS prospects are throughout baseball, and how generally aging and somewhat mediocre a lot of major league SS are as well. Seems like there's got to be a limit to how long Renteria and Tejada and Theriot and Betancourt etc can keep getting recycled, and I don't see a lot of burning talent getting ready to step up from AA and take their places. At some point a guy like Crawford, and for that matter Adrianza, is going to get some kind of shot (I mean for god's sake Everth Cabrera was a starting SS for a year and half). I have little faith that Crawford will do much with a shot, other than blaze a Bocockinan trail of k's through the national night sky, but like Bocock and Ransom and others before him, he'll probably keep bobbing up here and there as long as he can field major league grounders.

Otis, I think Charlie Culberson will an outstanding rookie this year. He is young but has the athlete ability to be another Buster Posey. He lacks the confidence in his fielding. When the right manager gets to him he will be fine. Witness the change in his batting success in last year's season. He has the speed the Giants need with the ability to intelligently run the bases. I hope the Giants will seriously look at him this year.

Culberson will spend the year at AA. You don't bring prospects up from A+ to the majors unless they are incredibly special or you are the Giants and have no back up plan for your 41 year old SS.

Kickham threw some pitches in rookie ball last year. They didn't go well, but I would probably be inclined to give him another chance. Rust, SSS, things like that.

Whoops! Thanks for the correction. I somehow missed that.

I BELIEVE he also pitched a couple innings in the rookie-ball playoffs, with about the same success. Still, mostly meaningless, since he hadn't pitched in forever, it was only a couple innings, etc. It will be interesting if he ends up being a Brandon Belt type, a talented player who but up poorer numbers than expected in college, only to break out in the pros. The Giants seem to see something, and they have been pretty good at evaluating young pitchers, not just developing good ones, but trading high on pitchers that fizzle out elsewhere.

Are there other horror movie doll names? Was there a prospect named "Bride of Chucky Williams" that horribly disappointed you?

Does Rex Barney count?

Chris, why do you hate the Giants?

Didn't realize Culberson was that bad. Thanks for this, it was actually quite enlightening. It's nice when there are a lot of prospect ranking lists out there, so you can really get a full view of the players.

The Culbie skepticism is valid, you aren't the only one with his arms crossed and a sideways glance. He may never be more than Bond without the defense or ability to get on base. I would have liked to have seen Kickham, Casilla, and Crawford higher. Kickham b/c he's a lefty with velo. Casilla b/c his sink translates well to MLB time, and Crawford b/c a no stick defender can still do a little at the highest level. But without Chuckie, I can't wait to see who you guys have in the top 10. /ends definitive comment to end all argument

Guess you're not completely buying the Culberson rebound? This was actually pretty enlightening. Looking through his stats, what he did in the California League isn't very impressive -- still a below-average walk rate, and his defense still has issues. From where I'd seen him on other prospect lists, I guess I thought he was much better than a #15 prospect in our system. I'm guessing your top ten list will have Jones, Adrianza, Brown, Parker, Peguero, Belt, Surkamp, Wheeler, Neal, and Bucardo?

Otis Anderson

Hope it's no spoiler to say that Chuckie Jones did not make our top 15. I imagine some flak will be coming our way for that.

Really? Eh, whatever...he didn't even make Sickels' top 20. Judging prospects is so subjective...as long as it's backed up, I don't think it matters.
