The other thing I forgot to mention: The fact that all those geezers are on one to two year contracts soothes my heart to no end. Old and flexible beats the heck out of old and committed.

Good stuff. I've heard a lot of Giants fans getting confused about aging curves lately, and there is a lot to get confused about. That selection (or survivor) bias stuff really matters and it's pure devilry to try to account for. I think it's important to note that only hitters follow the sort of curve that MGL is talking about. Pitchers on average just tend to decline. Or to put it another way, they peak around 23 years old. That 2006 team sucked at everything.

Bonds was awesome and we had Bizzaro Durham, but things were quite bleak. It was also the first year that Matt Morris pitched in SF. Yuck.

Giants fans are collectively praying, crossing their fingers, holding their lucky charms and wearing their lucky underwear, so that we see the real Pablo stand up in 2011. Speaking of up and coming players, Chris do you have the organizational depth chart of the top players at their positions-at each level? Curious to see where the Giants rank these guys.

I have the positional depth chart (which needs to be updated) above on the top menu of links. I'll get around to updating it before the season starts and rosters are a little more set.

Nothing as far as the entire organization though (All A Ball)? Looking to see how the organization lists their depth and talent at certain positions. Ex. Noonan vs. Culberson etc.

Exactly, that is why I don't understand why they are courting Edgar Renteria again. MVP or not he should have retired. Giants need to make sure that they have younger backups especially to F.Sanchez, and Torres who have injury history, and also for Burrell and Tejada, who cannot be expected to be iron men again. Getting a quick backup centerfielder is key, and I really don't consider Rowand a competent backup for Torres at all, and what to do with Schierholtz, who has zero power and no batting average to go along with a decent arm.

Cody Ross can play CF, he has played extensively there. Ratings vary greatly. UZR/150 puts him a little above average at all OF positions, but basically average in CF. Dewan's +/- DRS has him as very good (1+ win) in the corners and slightly above average in CF. Baseball Projections also has him very good in the corners (1+ win again) but below average in CF. Average of the three: roughly average defensively in CF. So he'll be a step down from Torres defensively and offensively (mainly in terms of OBP and leadoff duties), but he should be OK there relative to average CF over any regular DL stint, couldn't expect him to replace Torres. Burrell will be out of a starting job soon or later, when Belt comes up, Huff will move to LF, Burrell to bench, though I would suspect he would still get regular play, to give Torres rest and Ross had a down season in 2010 overall, so Burrell and Ross might be battling for time in the OF at some point too. And as much as we would like to forget him, Rowand will probably see time too, particularly if there is any DL time. I still like Schierholtz. Not going to be offensive leader, most probably, but when he is on, his OPS is usually over 1000. Add that to great defense in RF, that's pretty good stuff and a nice option to go to should we have a rash of OF injuries. Too bad most of his super-white hot streaks are followed by super-white cold streaks, typically due to an injury. He has also played some CF, not going to be classic there, but he does have good speed running bases, so he won't be a statue out there either.

Renteria wouldn't be a terrible back-up infielder. If his salary is around $1M like Burrell, I don't mind too much. He's probably going to go on the DL at some point in 2011 and playing in a part-time role might mitigate some of that.

Troubling, I agree. The difference, I think, is in 2006 there seemed to be no hope or plan for the future. This seems like more of a bridge team, complementing guys like Posey, Lincecum, Sanchez, Bumgarner and Cain, until guys like Belt and Zach Wheeler are ready to complement them. I feel much better about the future than I did in 2006.

I believe that Belt will have to lose 1B in ST. If he is hitting like he was in 2010 season, I do not see the Giants holding him back, they would move Huff to LF and Burrell to bench. While it is a good point about the starting lineup, as long as the Giants have the pitching staff that they have, they do not need much of a lineup to win with. As long as Sabean have multiple options available should someone DL or don't perform, like DeRosa and Bureell on the bench, the Giants would be able to survive most problems due to their pitching.

I can't see Pat being our everyday left fielder. Were probably gonna platoon left field with Nate and A-Row probably getting some playing time. Also, there's no guarantee Pablo is gonna be there either.

He seems like the starter, to me, right now. DeRosa is still coming back from injury and it's possible (likely?) that he won't be ready to play when the year starts. I'm not even sure that Schierholtz will be on next year's team (how many outfielders do we need?) and Rowand hasn't played an inning in LF since 2003.

If Brandon Belt cracks the line-up, that would have a nice impact on the average age.

Yeah. It's hard to say what the Giants will do with Belt. I'm not sure if he'll break ST with the team, but it seems like a decent idea to let him get regular PT in Fresno to start the year. If he's still killing the ball by mid-year (or slightly earlier) give him a call. You're right, though. He's someone to keep an eye on.
