Campanari: you make a pretty good point, that fans are probably being irrationally hateful of this move. My initial reaction was far worse than it became after thinking on it for a while. That being said, I don't think Tejada is on par with Uribe, not now. He's 37 and had a huge drop off last season. Will that continue or stabilize? I don't know. Offensively they are similar players, but at this point Uribe is a stronger defender, and possibly by a good margin. But, Tejada - even if he's slightly worse in '11 - for a single season at similar cost is proabably a much smarter bet than Uribe for 3 seasons.

I'm not going to quarrel with the analysis, but endorse the conclusion that Tejada and Uribe are much of a muchness--as to injuries, Uribe had several minor ones last year, while Tejada has been miraculously hardy, despite the difference in age. My comment is this: had we signed Uribe for the price we are paying for Tejada, and for only one year, I suspect that the response from fans would have been modified rapture, and maybe from this site, a grade well above C+. Whereas, for signing Tweedledum instead of Tweedledee, there's lots of disgruntlement and still more "meh." How come? In an apparent plight, we are about as well off as we would have been with the guy we were targeting, and to get there, we gave up nothing for a one-year rental, we are paying out less money, and we are not subjecting ourselves to extortion from the Twins, Bosox, Rays, et al. Isn't this a clear case of widespread irrationality among fans?

Couldn't agree more. Uribe will hit for more power and Tejada will hit for a better average with a higher OBP and more GIDP, but other than that there's not much difference other than their durability. The other thing I think everyone forgets--and remarkably so, given the 2010 Giants--is that the team you start with isn't the team you finish with. Tejada can play 3B and at least one of the SS available now (Hardy, Bartlett or Scutaro) along with other guys like Jose Reyes will be available come July. If Tejada is epic fail for the first 3 months of the season, he can replaced at the trade deadline, but if Panda starts eating his and Uribe's left over portions at the post-game spread then he can slide over and play 3rd. Also, if Brandon Crawford learns how to hit and Mark DeRosa winds up with some ice on his steps over the winter then Tejada can fill in the super-utility role. I think this is a great signing given the Giants options.

It's really hard to complain about the move in and of itself. The other shortstop options are pretty unpalatable too. It's kind of annoying that we're perpetually stuck in the position of finding iffy veteran SS's to throw money at, but it beats playing your Bococks and Burrisses. We're eating at Long John Silver's, but at least we picked the shrimp dish and not the bottom-feeder surprise.

I waited to read your thoughts on this deal until after I wrote something, but we came to roughly the same conclusion anyway. I think Hardy would have been ideal, but I guess maybe the Twins wanted a lot or aren't shopping him. Bartlett too, but for what in return? Good work, Chris. I think a 1.5 season is probably a best case scenario, though, not necessarily a likely outcome. I think a WAR of 1 is more in the middle of "a lot of happy" and a crash and burn disaster. Note to pitchers: don't allow ground balls to left side, if at all possible.

If some were on the case of Sandoval for hitting into DP's, Tejada has led the league in GIDP's multiple times, and will hit into far more DP's than Sandoval, or AJ Pierzinksi. I don't want to hear how unhappy people are with all the GIDP's the giants had last year, if you are happy with the signing of Tejada. Even with all the GIDP's the giants still won the World Series.

Hey at one year it could beat the deal the Dodgers gave Uribe. You never know whats gunna happen to someone in there 30's

In general I agree with your conclusions but do see upside that perhaps you do not. I do however again have questions with regards to your math. How are you doing your wDEF? If this is just an average of DRS and UZR your numbers are not even close to accurate.

(UZR*.5)+(DRS*.5)/2 --- N/M, I had the denominator screwed up. I'm going to average the two for now. Not the best way, but I'll come back to it.

Tejada's overall numbers over the past season or two don't strike me as very promising. However, he did seem to have some success with San Diego which is one positive. I'm guessing he will be okay - Let him bat 7th and hope he doesn't hit into many double plays. Also, what is his propensity to ground into double plays? The Giants don't need any more of those than they had last season. I think I'd still rather have Uribe - Even if his strategy in the box is to swing as hard as he can, that made him dangerous - Tejada isn't going to hit 20+ hr or drive in 80ish RBIs.

He hits into a lot of double plays. He’s averaged 21 per year and has led the league (2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2009) several times.
