There’s nothing like a 10-9 loss at Coors Field to make you revaluate why you’re staying up to 11:30 PM to watch a heart-crushing game of baseball. Oh, what’s that? That’s Troy Tulowitzk hitting a game-winning single into LF — just outside the reach of our portly SS — that’s then hilariously fielded by defensive specialist Pat Burrell. It’s harsh to criticize Burrell, he’s been one of the few consistent offensive threats on the team since he joined, but last night’s game showed why that the Giants defense could be a problem in close games. The outfield, when Burrell and Guillen flank Torres, is a liability. The left side of the infield with Uribe and Sandoval also leaves a lot to be desired.
Still, I can’t stand watching baseball in Coors Field. It’s the stupid purple dinosaur mascot. The ridiculous field dimensions. And the heart-stomping defeats that seem to occur with regularity. Blech.
As of this morning, the Giants are 0.5 games back in the West and tied for the lead in the Wild Card. My other gripe with last night’s game was the strike zone. I’ll post a plot later, but it was inconsistent to say the least. I hate when fans or players whine about the zone, but it was truly bad last night. Humans make mistakes, and that’s OK, but I’m ready for robot umpires. Or at the bare minimum, cyborgs.
Matt Cain, who is ridiculously awesome, takes the hill today for the series finale. Cain, like most of the staff, has been terrific in September. A win today would cap a series win and push the Rockies back to 5 games out of first place. God help us, today will also be the last time we play in Coors Field this year, too.
