Breaking: Andres Torres to Miss 10-14 Days

This doesn’t bode well for the Giants’ playoff chances.

Torres out 10 days to 2 weeks with appendicitis. Having surgery now.

Torres has been in a bit of a slump recently and this could explain why. I can’t imagine it feels very comfortable playing baseball while your appendix hurts. This means that Aaron Rowand — oh god — should be shuffled back into the starting lineup. Rowand has had a pretty awful year with the Giants. His current wOBA (.292) is brought down by a below-average BABIP (.275) and there is a big drop-off between Rowand and Torres defensively. Also, Rowand’s baserunning isn’t in the same league as Torres. This most likely means that on most days our outfield configuration will be Burrell – Rowand – Guillen.

Burrell. Rowand. Guillen.

/barf.

If the Giants were smart, they might give Cody Ross a few more at-bats but losing Torres for the stretch run is damaging. No two ways about it.

Cody Ross has got to be used in CF. Continuing to put Rowand out there is suicide. I would try Sanchez leading off and put Cody into the #2 spot.

The Giants haven't yet tapped Cody Ross' potential -- he should definitely be starting in center field over Rowand, and for that matter, Schierholtz should start at least a few games rather than Guillen (although it might be hard for the Dodgers' series, as Bochy seems an absolute slave to the lefty-righty match-up) -- still, an outfield of Burrell, Ross and Schierholtz sounds a LOT better to me than Burrell, Rowand and Guillen!

I disagree Sanchez has speed but think Bochy might try this and it wouldn't be the worst idea. Rowand at leadoff = season suicide. Torres was slumping horrible but his D was key. This team simply has NO viable leadoff options without Torres and this it's hard to ask Bochy to come up with a solution when there isn't one...

Even if Rowand or Ross replaces Torres, you never know what Bochy is going to do. While it appears that today Rowand is in the one spot. You might see a Sanchez, Posey, Huff, Burrell, Guillen, Sandoval, Uribe, (Rowand / Ross) line up. Even though Sanchez wants to be a #2 guy, Bochy could try to start him as 1. Sanchez has been hitting well and he has speed.
