I’m surprised by Gary Mathews. Sarge was one of my favorites when I was in HS. Of course, he was pretty fast, and that probably made up for some of his glove deficiencies. Now Garry Maddox in CF could really pick it. When the Giants had him and Sarge and Bobby Bonds in the OF, that was quite a trio!

I’m a little surprised to see that Jack Clark missed the list. He had a couple of awful years from a defensive perspective, but also surprised to see Kevin Mitchell not on there either, even though I loved Mitchell and still remember his bare handed catch in St. Louis.

In looking at the list though, it gives you a new appreciation for Pat Burrell and Aubrey Huff. Not quite the butchers they’re made out to be, especially the “Best Athlete on the Team.”

Not surprised that Benard was on this list. I can remember some horrible times with him patrolling CF but I think the note that it was the Giants fault carries some weight. The problem is that the Giants have had platoon help in CF for a long time now and I think he was the best option. Benard played primarily in RF in ’98 and moved to CF in ’99 because noone was going to ask Ellis Burks to be there.

Wonder how Schierhotlz would fair out there…….or what the numbers say.
