Well he ended up falling off the table, as he started swinging at junk again. It looked like he lost patience as the season went on. If I were actually bright I might have noticed that he was essentially not swinging at anything, as I mentioned, which meant that he wasn't seeing the ball any better, he just wasn't swinging. Pitchers can adjust to that. Not swinging is only a sign of improvement if it is due to great pitch recognition. Oh well Renteria, you dastardly fiend.

I agree that we can't assume that Renteria is going to kill it this year. His SwStr% is only 5.7%, a full percentage point lower than he has ever had, which screams small sample size issue. This is consistent with what my eyes have been telling me, as he seems to be doing a much better job of fouling pitches off, especially off-speed pitches. The only thing that seems consistent across the board, which might be worth noting, is that his swing percentage is down 8.3%. Again this matches what I've been seeing, as he seems to be sitting back a little longer. His swings outside of the strike-zone are down 13.1% and his swings on pitches in the strike-zone are down 9.8%. Again, I don't expect these small sample size numbers to remain constant, but there is an obvious explanation if you accept the health story. It seemed last year that he was starting the bat early since he was having trouble getting around on average and above-average fastballs. As a result he was swinging at pitches pretty much wherever they ended up, and he couldn't stay back on off-speed pitches. Pitchers seem to have noticed this as his zone% was down 5 points in 2009 compared to 2008. If he avoids swinging at pitches out of the zone, lets say a 5% improvement after a correction down from the 13% its currently at, he should see more pitches in the zone as pitchers have to come after him. That should allow him, if his contact rates hold constant to have a much better season. I'm not saying anything conclusively, I'm just saying that there is a perfectly plausible explanation for why he's done so well thus far, and why he might be able to continue the trend. At the same time the numbers could completely fall off the table, and he could have another terrible year. I'm still holding out hope though.

So, wait: does this also mean that the Vernon Wells signing WASN'T a good deal after all!?

Word. His 0-5 tonight confirms the negative suspicions, if you're into confirmation bias the pessimistic way.
