I like the piece. It just makes me think.... If the Giants love speed soo much, why did they let Rajai Davis go? He seems to be making much more of a career than the Pharaoh ever will.

Definitely liked this piece. I'm kind of with you on Velez. He is a likable guy and he does have good speed, especially when running from first to third. That being said, he is atrocious getting out of the box when hitting from the right side (which severely kills his speed), he doesn't seem to have much instinct when stealing bases and, like you said, he doesn't get on-base enough to utilize his speed. Like most people have said, Velez was really a product of a good stretch last year. Other than that stretch in late July and early August, Velez was a pretty mediocre player. However, you can't really hate Velez either because he's not a bad defender (in Left Field, anyway, he has negative UZR numbers everywhere else) and like you said, he's not a bad guy. By the way, Velez's defining moment was that slide that flipped Russell Martin. Velez actually was classy about and patted him on the back after Martin got back up. Martin though proved his jerk nature and had MacDonald throw at Sandoval on the next pitch. Seriously, if the Giants ever acquire Russell Martin, there should be a riot outside of AT&T Park.

And to add: I really do have a hard time rooting against Velez, even if I come off that way. He's like a cartoon character. I'll be bummed when Fred Lewis is released so Velez can make the team.
