A pair of 1 year type contracts to Johnson and Zaun for under $10MM total would go a long ways toward starting to abating my rage at this off season’s first 3 choices.

Upside. Johnson offers more upside than Garko. Like I said in the post, it's a gamble to sign Johnson, but he does offer a payoff that could be pretty rewarding (a +3 win total). He's also got a skill-set that the Giants drastically need. I think Ishikawa is underrated in a sense, but he's probably not really a +10 run defender at first. If you go conservatively, I would project him closer to +5 runs going forward. I don't think you should worry about losing Travis Ishikawa if you want to try and contend. It's a risk to sign Johnson, but he offers more upside at 1B than anyone on our current roster. Sometimes as a team you have to take those risks.

In 2009 Garko had a WAR of .8, according to Fangraphs, despite his miserable showing with the Giants. That's less than a half win fewer than Johnson. Bill James appears to be projecting a better 2010 for him. I'm unsure it's worth taking the risk with Johnson, and (presumably) getting rid of Ishikawa, for this small a potential gain. Can you elaborate as to why you want to take the risk?
