Posey Promoted

From Schulman’s blog on SFGate:

In a dramatic about-face, the Giants have purchased the contract of 2008 first-round pick Buster Posey, who will be in Philadelphia for tonight’s game, GM Brian Sabean told The Chronicle. More momentarily.

Not much information out there right now but Posey getting the call could mean a couple of things for the Giants. One of them being that Molina’s injuries might be keeping him out of the starting lineup a little longer than expected. In yesterday’s post, we talked about how the Giants really can’t afford to start Whiteside for an extended period of time.

This is pretty big news as Posey is arguably the Giants #1 prospect. I’ll update this post as news comes out, but in the meantime, here’s a quick rundown on Buster’s minor league numbers.

Year Level PA BB% ISO wRAA wOBA
2008 R 31 16.1 0.308 4.4 0.518
2008 A- 11 24.4 0.182 0.9 0.423
2009 A+ 291 13.4 0.213 27.5 0.434
2009 AAA 126 11.9 0.198 5.8 0.385

Check out that sexy, sexy walk rate. More updates as they come.

After hitting the post button, Schulman updated his blog with some additional information.

A couple of interesting quotes.

The move is prompted by Bengie Molina’s lingering quadriceps strain. He has not started a game since the series in Colorado, and team officials have been sending signals that they are frustrated with Molina’s unwillingness to play through the injury in a pennant race.

The Giants also decided to bring up left-handed reliever Dan Runzler, a 23-year-old reliever and ninth-round pick in 2007, to provide another weapon against the many left-handed bats the Giants must face down the stretch.

Runzler is an interesting arm in the Alex Hinshaw mold of relievers. Lefty pitcher, good stuff, but pretty bad control at times. Over 4 levels in minor league baseball this year, Runzler posted a 12.7 K/9 with a 3.7 BB/9. In 133 career minor league innings he owns a 4.9 BB/9.

Additional link: Baggs is now confirming the call-up as well.

Whatever you do, don’t play Posey. Rookies can’t handle pressure, that’s why they’re rookies. Just let him accrue service time.

I don’t get our management. They have no baseball sense and no business sense. What the fuck are they bringing to the table?
