Here’s a plot of Pablo’s at-bat today in the 8th inning. Velez was on third and there was 1 out. Ultimately, this at-bat didn’t kill the Giants (the Rockies tacked on another run in an ugly 8th inning by the Giants) but it was a good chance to tie the game.
Pitches are labeled by the number in the at-bat and the result.
The final pitch in the AB from Jimenez was about .5 inches off the ground, Pabo swung, and chopped a slow grounder to first base for the 2nd out — and stranding the runner at third base. It’s hard to criticize a guy with a .390+ wOBA, but man, was that frustrating to watch. I think everyone in the stadium knew that Pablo was going to swing on the 3-2 pitch. He’s made some amazing strides this year, but he’s still going to have to learn when to hold back and not hack.
