You make the smartest argument I've seen re Sanchez so far, Chris, I'm compelled to feel the same way. And Gf4l--I agree, patience is our best strategy this season.

I'd add that Sanchez' trade value wouldn't be all that high right now. He's a promising young pitcher, but he might get a whole lot better, and pretty quickly. Now, obviously, he could blow his arm out, in which case his trade value falls to zero. He could continue to struggle with his control, in which case his trade value would plateau, then gradually decrease over time. But he could put it all together and become an above-league-average starter, in which case, if we need to move him, he could attract a Grade A prospect or three. Right now, the names I'm hearing are on a level of Dan Uggla. Blech. So, yeah, we wait. Unless the Phillies want to trade John Mayberry Jr. for him, plus maybe, I don't know, Kyle Drabek. Yes, I am in fact smoking crack. It's time to be patient. We're not catching the Dodgers this season, and help is on the way: Posey, Crawford, Villalona, Kieschnick, in time, Rafael Rodriguez. Build the rotation, see how the young guys develop, look to 2010 or 11. If we really get lucky, Sabean grows a brain and doesn't re-sign Bengie and Randy Wynn, but lets them go as free agents, so we can all see what John Barr can do with two 2010 supplemental picks.

I'll post this here since it didn't make it into the main post. Fangraph's rest of season ZiPs numbers for Sanchez are encouraging. It's got him knocking down his BB/9 to a closer career average of 5 per 9 and posting an 8.5-ish K/9 rate. That all adds up to a 4.10 FIP. And by tRA+ (94) Sanchez is pitching like a #4 starter. Close to being a borderline #3.

Jeez, you saved me like 800 words.

It's pretty inane to consider moving a cheap league average starter to the bullpen.
