@Dave I hope Yabu catches on somewhere else. He seemed like a nice player and he was a pleasant surprise last year. I just didn't expect him to replicate last year's performance this year. @MrLomez >> I do have one quibble though. I think your criteria is a little off. Yes, this person is nominally replacing Romo, but I don’t think whoever is ultimately chosen for the last bullpen spot will replace Romo situationally. You're right, and I didn't mean to imply that whichever reliever replaces him will take his role. Because that might not happen. I think they'll probably just lean more on Affedlt or Howry until something gets figured out. But, you're right that they might chose to give some of Romo's work to Taschner or Hinshaw. The problem with that is that neither are really great bets to have success next season. Hinshaw is like the left-handed version of Sadler -- great stuff, no idea where it's going. Taschner hasn't been very good for a few years now. If Romo is hurt, the bullpen drops off quite a bit after Wilson, Affeldt, and Howry. If the Giants just want a guy who can come in and slag some innings for them, I think Brandon Medders might get the most consideration. He has no upside but he does have MLB experience which might appeal to the team in some manner.

Good stuff, as usual. I'd also tab Miller for this role - certainly over Sadler, who is one of my least favorite Giants. I do have one quibble though. I think your criteria is a little off. Yes, this person is nominally replacing Romo, but I don't think whoever is ultimately chosen for the last bullpen spot will replace Romo situationally. This person will essentially be "the worst" of the team's relievers and will therefore be relegated to the "least leveraged" situations. In effect, Taschner or Hinshaw - or whoever performs best in ST - will be the person who "replaces" Romo, no? If that's the case, isn't the pitcher's "stuff" secondary, or at least supplemental, to his ability to eat innings. Obviously those two things generally go hand in hand, but there are certain pitchers who can just pitch and pitch and pitch and still be available to pitch tomorrow. Isn't that the guy we want taking that final bullpen slot? The guy who can come in and finish off a Barry Zito 4 and a third IP, 6 run, stinker? I'd want a guy who could come in and just throw strikes for 3 innings. Sadler is DEFINITELY not that guy. Miller has the best BB/9 of them all, which is why I'd go that direction. You get what I mean here?

I can’t fault your logic or your rankings. The Hennessy comparison I think is spot on. Medders is the safety net for this bunch. I think Yabu will get a look, if he wants it, from someone. No, they will not trade much more than an old ham sandwich for him but he did have a decent season last year and a lot of teams have middle relief issues every year and not all of them are cellar dwellers though they would make the bulk of his market.
