Great post on Tyler. I wish him best of luck in Tyler, he got to live the dream, something many of us in the SF Bay Area would have loved to do, but now he's moving on. Good point on contracts. I have to think, however, that Correia is influenced by wanting to pitch at home, much like how Tyler Walker got to pitch with SF, and was willing to take a lesser contract to get that opportunity. Plus, his chance of making their rotation seems pretty good with them downsizing and particularly if they do deal Peavy, and his own raison d'etre is to start. He has been chomping on the bit to start the whole time he's been with the Giants. Also, that is probably what lowered his value, as he has not been that good as a starter, while, as you noted, he has been OK as a reliever. Those three reasons, I think, has driven him to take a lesser contract with the Padres, probably with the thinking that once he proves himself in 2009 as a starter, he will get a much better contract in 2010 and beyond. My guess would be that the Padres 40 man roster is pretty full right now and thus they told him this is the only way he gets the opportunity to pitch for them. As you noted, he has been a pretty good reliever and he could have gotten more money as a reliever, as much as Walker, but he was probably marketing himself as a starter.
