At least with Wigginton and Sandoval at the corners they would gobble up everything hit their way...literally! ... Sorry.

Sorry, I took the >>It’s easy to snide at Sabean for one thing or another, harder to keep track of the actual details. As a remark against Renteria. I just misread you. I think I agree with you on the overall point of things. And I think we agree on the big picture, but maybe disagree on some of the smaller details. I just think when Sabean says something, it's not carved in stone. It's got a good chance to change. And thanks for the nice words, I'm glad someone is enjoying the site.

And, his AFL defense was pretty bad, I'll give you that. But I wonder how much the Giants are making out of a handful of AFL games. Too much? Too little? I think it's almost the reverse of what Pablo did last year. He came up and was red hot for a brief time. As a result, the Giants are going to play him at 3B -- probably his weakest defensive position. I'm fine with that, but what would have happened if Pablo played in the AFL and tanked? Would he be on the team next year? Would he have to battle for spot? I think it's more likely that Sabean was never all that comfortable with Burriss at shortstop to begin with and he might not be as comfortable with Pablo at third.

To me, it's two different things. Burriss was up and down during the season but did very well at the end, enough to get his shout-out from Sabean. Sandoval dominated all season long, a short AFL would not have killed his chances to start, though it could have killed his chances to start at 3B if he mangled that as badly as Burriss did. Burriss has been on the edge and never moved off it, whereas Sandoval had a breakout year in 2008. Plus, it doesn't hurt that he hits for power, while Burriss, not so much if at all. I understand small samples, but really, 10 errors in like 25 games, that's like going all the way back to Little League, or maybe even T-ball. The rope to hang yourself is shorter when the expectations is that you won't be able to handle something, the rope only gets long when you show enough that they hope that it's only small samples and not true talent. Burriss has a short one, and I suspect that Sandoval has a short one too, just longer than Burriss. But that doesn't mean that Sabean didn't mean what he said at that moment of time. I have read your blog daily for months now, and I don't recall saying anything in my comment about Renteria. My point is that I think Sabean says what he means at that point in time, but if new information comes in or as conditions change, he will change things up as necessary. That was my point of listing all those past things out, you can only plan so far out, you go with what you know at the moment, and as things change (like a player tanking) you then need to adjust. That, to me, isn't not saying what he means, its giving your honest opinion at a particular point of time, and adjusting your opinion when new information/conditions come in. And, by the way, I think you did a great analysis of the Renteria deal. Keep up the good work, I look forward to your posts.

If you've been reading this blog over the past few weeks, I'm fine with the Renteria signing. I just think that what Sabean says (Burriss will be our SS, Sandoval will be our 3B) and what he means are two different things. That's probably true for most GM's. I just don't think the Giants are THAT comfortable with Pablo playing 3B, despite them saying otherwise. And Burriss is a recent example of something similar.

Nice article overall, good job as always. I would note one discrepancy, in the last section you start off with him as above average hitter but leave off with him as an average; based on your stats, I assume that was an oversight leaving off "above". About Burriss, the most probable thing is that Burriss played himself out of the SS job with his poor play in the AFL. 10 errors in like 24 games? And he didn't hit well either. Now, he may have been nursing (another) injury but the fact is that he didn't perform when he needed to. Jobs are not forever, Brian Wilson had a job pretty much assured in 2007 but had such a horrible spring that he got sent back to the minors. That is what you want on your team, meritocracy, Burriss earned a starting nod as incumbent with his play late in the 2008 season, but lost it with pretty horrible defense in the AFL. Sandoval is keeping his with his nice play in the winter league right now. And it is not just playing poorly, it also has to do with the Giants belief level in your abilities. Sabean kept Lewis in the starting LF job, even when Roberts came back. Cain, Lincecum, and Sanchez had horrible stretches where they gave up a boatload of runs, but they kept their starting jobs. Wilson was shaky at times in 2008, but he kept his job all season long too. It is a fine line between whether the Giants believe in your talent level and how long you suck. In most cases, the prospects are not really as good as the fans think they are. In Burriss's case, the Giants have been actually patient, most reports on Burriss after the draft was that he didn't have it to stay at SS, that 2B was his eventual position. Apparently the AFL poor defense was the final straw. You can even go back to Ellison and Niekro, the Giants gave both of them starting jobs as they earned it with their early play, but Ellison soon played himself out of that job, and Niekro by the next season. The Giants will reward players for good play, but sports is a "what have you done for me lately" type of job, with a very short leash for those without a long history of good performance or prospect status. It's easy to snide at Sabean for one thing or another, harder to keep track of the actual details.
