I’ve decided to change the look of Bay City Ball just a little. What you’re looking at is the new theme that I’m going to be using. This is the fourth incarnation of the site. It’s a little more simple and basic and hopefully easier to read. Everything isn’t running completely the way I’d like it, so you might see a few changes happen over the next couple of days but this should serve as a pretty good base to work from.
To do list
- Create a new logo for the site that’ll be displayed at the top, replacing the bare bones text option that we currently have. Done.
- See about enabling avatars for user comments. The jury is still out on this, if you’re for or against this, be sure to post about it in the comments. Avatars are on for users in the comments section. Done. Go to Gravatar and set up your avatar, if you want one, making sure that you use the same email address there, as you do here for this site.
- Some minor theme changes — adding a home, pages, and about button to the top of every page. Done.
- Some minor text and color changes. Done.
That’s whats on the list for now. If you have any suggestions as to what would make the site better, easy to use, and more readable, please, please, leave a comment. Readability and user satisfaction are two of the biggest goals for me.
Thanks for reading!

Not necessarily for or against avatars, but just a vote in favor of http://www.gravatar.com if you opt for an outside service.
Keep up the good work. Always happy to see Bay City Ball pop up on my RSS.
Thanks, CJ.
Yeah, I was looking at Gravatar, it’s already set to default for avatars with this particular theme. Have you had good success with it? I’d never heard of it until today.
It’s very nice, but I don’t see how you don’t have some orange if it’s going to be strictly a Giants blog. After all, their t-shirts says, “I see orange people”.
I can go either way with avatars.
Yeah, it definitely needs more orange. The logo should have some, so that might help a little.
Chris, the new look is very simplified. What lead you to make the change? It’s got a very clean feel to it. I can’t wait to see how it looks after the final touches have been added.
I mostly wanted something that was easier to read, I thought the old theme was kinda hard to read sometimes. Thanks for commenting!
Avatars usually provoke a huge “ Meh “ from me. Some people do a great job choosing them and it shows. I think most people don’t spend the time and energy to do it well though.
Otherwise I enjoy the new changes.
