Nice post! I like Cowart too and given his success, even if he is unorthodox, why not challenge him by moving him up faster? Still, they must have known this when they drafted him but saw something they liked.

I would have also noted his BB/9: 0.86 and 1.49, respectively, which is excellent – good pitchers get it under 3.0, better pitchers get it under 2.0.

Also, clearly, one of the reasons his HR/9 is low is because of his extreme GB/FB ratio. But if you look at his HR/FB ratio – which, research says, most pitchers regress to a 10% mean over time – he is also outstanding there as well: 4.9% and 3.5%.

In addition, BABIP is suppose to be .300 for most pitchers, but his was .214 and .276, respectively. The .276 is probably within random range of .300, so it might just have been that he was just lucky, but given his high GB ratio, he probably can get his BABIP lower than normal as well.

Next year, he should be at San Jose and I’m hoping that if he can do very well again, that he might get a mid-season jump to AA. He was pretty consistently good in 2007, month by month as well, with only a slightly poorer results mid-season but he ended on a good note.

Great write up, can’t wait to see Cowart play if he’s moved to San Jose this year.
