Hey Martin, Sorry about the lost post, I'm currently stranded in a hotel because the East Coast is getting dumped on with ice and snow. I can relate about bad weather! Ochoa had a "breakout" season in 2007 but it still wasn't very good. It's true that he would probably hit close to Omar in 2008 but that isn't saying much. Where you can separate them is defense. Ochoa may be slick with the glove but he's not going to be a +20-ish SS like Omar is. Advantage Omar. The only way that Ochoa comes close to the MLB is if the very-durable Omar goes down with an injury. I like Shelton too and I think the Pena example is pretty similar. Both had good minor league lines and inconsistent MLB performance. Like I said, he's not Pena but in terms of potential value and player-type, he's similar. >> Both Detroit and Boston could have used 1B and yet both released him. Because Detroit and Boston didn't use Pena properly shouldn't take away from his value, potential or real. Both teams made bad decisions, especially IMO, Boston. In 37 AB's Pena raked in Pawtucket and didn't get much time in the majors. Any team looking at Pena could see that at worst, he was going to be around a league average 1B. At best, he might tap into some of that potential ever more, and thats what he did this year with the Rays. You know my stance on Ort at 1B, but I'd be OK with him if he started against LHP in a platoon with Shelton. I don't think Dallimore and McClain are that comparable besides the obvious minor league veteran angle. Dallimore never hit for power like McClain has in the minors. I think time has almost ran out on Ishikawa, his K-rate in the minors has been pretty big over the last couple of years and I doubt he'd make enough contact in the majors to take advantage of his pop. It doesn't look very good for a players future when he K's at a 35.1% rate in A+ ball as a older player.

Crap, damn weather, cost me my post! Let's see if I can re-do it... Ochoa, if you are going to mention his poor career batting line, you should also mention that he had his best line ever in AAA last season and that he's only 25 this season. Also, his MLE for 2007 is better than what Vizquel hit overall, and is similar to what Omar hit (.252/.314/.333/.647) once he got his bat going in late April. I'm OK with Shelton, but I'm tired of people using Carlos Pena as the great example of a pickup. People have been waiting since 2002 for Pena to do what he did in 2007. At what point do you give up on a player who has potential but hasn't been meeting it? Both Detroit and Boston could have used 1B and yet both released him. Also, when 30+ year old hitters are doing well in AAA, it's not because they have much talent, it's because they have age and experience over almost every pitcher in the league. See Brian Dallimore for most recent example of how it don't translate to the majors. So please, I don't want to see any more references to McCain. Also, what's wrong with Ortmeier? I can understand not wanting him to start full-time, but his main problem in the minors has been an inability to hit RHP that well, even as a switch-hitter. However, he has usually mashed LHP, both in 2005 and 2007, he killed them relative to RHP, posting mid-800+ OPS both years vs. LHP. A Shelton/Ortmeier platoon would be good. I still like Ishikawa, he's only 25 this year, he's still young, just running out of time now.
